Re
Canada Pay
Reader fears brain drain
as result of extra -billing b
Dear editor:
As of now, a number of medical
specialists have left Ontario. The Canadian
standard of medical education is one of the '
highest in the world and a doctor trained in
Canada doesn't have to take a backseat to
anyone.
A number of years ago, there was a brain
drain from Canada into the U.S., of this pro-
fession. I believe that a similar situation
may occur once again.
The Canadian people will realize what
real extra -billing is, if they have to go to the,
U.S., to obtain specialized medication. Not
only will they have to pay the doctor's fee, •
but an approximate 30 percent increase in
,the variation of the dollar. •
What the Ontario government failed to do
was to make fee allowances for specialized
medication, which were satisfactory; conse-
quently, they created a chaotic condition in
Ontario.
The specialists have enough responsibility
and concern without submitting themselves
to a political hassle concerning their fees.
Why should they have to wait a month or
more to be reimbursed, while the govern-
ment deducts bank interest from the doc-
tors' fees for about one month, when they
can practise their profession in another
LETTERS
country and get paid in advance?
Would Canadian doctors have a. difficult
time to begin their profession in the United
States? Just ask any American how long
they wait in line for the services of a doctor
over there, and you will be enlightened
considerably.
One individual said that the medical pro-
fession act like spoiled kids. May I suggest
to this person, that he investigate the situa-
tion in the United States, and he will find out
how much the public bas been spoilt here.
The sooner the political nincompoops are
voted out of Queen's Park, the better it will
be for all,Canadians who are concerned
about the medical chaos that they (the
go'yernment) have created.
The action of the government in banning
extra -billing has shifted the cost of
specialized medicine onto the '-general
public, and the over-all standard of medical
care will drop considerably`.
Sincerely,
N.J. Minaker
Tiger Dunlop tomb is a disgrace
Dear editor,
I am happy to be back in Goderich after a
16 year absence. Renewing old ac-
quaintences and making new ones seems
easier in a small friendly town such as ours.
Attractive core redevelopment and plann-
ed growth with attention to green space are
all evidence of considerable civic pride and
a desire to cultivate a relaxing atmosphere.
But (and there is always a but), in the
course of helping my son "discover"
Goderich, I found that we still have some
rough edges to work on. With all the hype
about -Colborne TownshVs Sesq icen__leJ
nial and "Tiger Country" a visit to Dunlop's
Tomb, billed an historic site seemed
appropriate
What I found was an embarrassment. The
road signs on the highway clearly indicated
where to turn. Where to stop and what route
to take after that, however were a matter of
guess -work. Undaunted; we fought spider
webs and thistles up the hillside only to find
that the over -growth continued to the site
itself, where sumacs and weeds totally
blocked the view of the river from the look-
out.
Who is responsible for this historic site
and why has it been neglected so tragically?
If it is not to be maintained, perhaps it would
be-kinderto remove -the signs that honor

Dear editor,
This. is another extra -billing letter - not
about doctors - but about Goderich gas
stations.
Is there a justified reason why there is a
six cent per litre difference in the price of
gas between Goderich and..towns such as
Listowel? The price in Listowel per litre is
3,5'/2 cents, for regular, gas, while it is selling
in Goderich for 41% cents per litre.
1 have bought gas in Clinton, Exeter, Mit-
chell and other area towns when I travel out
of town because the gas is usually cheaper
than in Goderich. •
If -the gas station operators ever decide
they would like a boost in business in their
Goderich establishments, they should pro-
test to their companies and have their prices
brought into line with the other towns in the
area.
Until then, I will continue, as I'm sure
many others are doing, to buy my gas where
it is the cheapest. •
It is time. this rip-off stopped.
