trspnsor Learn t0 Sail course
BY PAUL HARTMAN
If you're worried about finding something
for your child to do this summer, the
Bayfield Yacht Club may have the answer.
That organization, with the help of the
Goderich Yacht Club, is sponsoring a learn
to sail program at the Bayfield Harbor dur-
ing the summer months.
The fledgling program, a joint venture by
the Goderich and Bayfield clubs, is designed
to teach area youngsters the rudiments of
sailing in a two week period. The Goderich
Yacht Club will be supplying the boats. for
the program while the Bayfield club will
provide theuse of all the necessary
facilities.
Cathy Cudmore, a 19 -year-old Oakville
resident, will be running the four two-week
sessions for youths aged nine to 16. The pro-
gram runs Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am
to 4:00 pm.
Cathy is a Canadian Yachting Association
Certified `Blue' instructor, a title she earned
in the Toronto area where sailing programs
similar to the one in Bayfield, are quite
popular.
This is the first time such a course has
been run in the Bayfield area, though the
Goderich Yacht Club offered a learn to sail
course a few years back. That venture pro-
duced some interest but, the program faded
out when the instructor retired.
Cathy admits that the program is not go-
ing to make a lot of money in its first year of
operaton. "We're running it pretty well at
cost to try to get people interested" she
noted.
A two "week session will cost club
members $100, while non-members will pay
$120.
"What makes the course attractive is the
fact that the children aren't being babysat
-they're 1e2sni;g something worthwhile,
something they can use,"she remarked., ,
Along with the children's program, the
club is offering lessons for adults from
6:00-9:30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday
evening. As well, private and semi -private
lessons can be taught if someone requests
them.
No prior knowledge of sailing is required
but those wishing to take the course must be
able to swim.
The first session is already underway but
there is still plenty of time for youngsters to
enroll in one of the three, other courses. •

gram, call Cathy at 565-2498.
