John Jeffery and Son Lumber and Building Supplies 163 Elgin Ave. E., Goderich 524-8171 Peo.'l.e Dap]tine Malins has ndesigned urn agan tart Daphne Malins, a 'former Goderich Township resident and a well known face in and around Goderich, is in the news in Oliver, B.C. where she now lives. Daphne has designed the exquisite Okanagan tartan, featuring the colours of the beautiful valley that Daphne calls home. "There's the yellow for the sunlight, light olive for the sage brush, deep blue for the lakes, white for the snow, creamy pinkfor the orchard blossoms, khaki for the tree - trunks, brighter green for the orchard grasses, pale blue for the summer haze often seen over the Valley;" says Daphne, an avid naturalist. Daphne's tartan' has been officially registered with the federal department of Consumer Corporate Affairs, and it is becoming a sensation in British Columbia. The wool for the tartan is dyed and spun by Spinrite Lister of Ontario, spinners of Patton and Baldwin and Mary Maxim wools. The tartan itself is being woven com- mercially by the West Coast Woollen Mill in Vancouver. But it was Daphne who designed the tar- tan on her cast-iron, 36 -inch loom, run on tappets and made at the turn of the century by George Hattersley of. Keighley, Yorkshire, England. Daphne was taught to use the loom 55 years ago by the London School of Weaving while she was in school at Berkshire, England. While living in the Goderich area, Daphne ovee,, tartans for a number of area residents who say Daphne's work is of ex- cellent quality. She is diverting a little from tartan weav- ing these days, experimenting the art of shadowing or graduating colour on the loom. She is also learning more about Welsh double -weaving, but her sample book of 52 tartans is st.ii her first love. When she isn't sitting at her loom, Daphne is involved in a hiking/bicycling society in Oliver, and is working with her associates to establish an international trail through the Okanagan.. She is a regular player at the local golf course and she's a member of the Legion Ladies Auuiliary in Oliver. Besides all that, Daphne works as a part- time correspondent for the Oliver Chronicle. "It should come as no surprise that Daphne is still a going concern in this com- munity," writes Frank R. Stariha, news editor for The Chronicle. "Around here, she's known as Hurricane Daphne." :fii.• 1...lil....iiiiiputil/11/11/111111.10 :•a ,.3.111,1aL111). ............::::::::;I:::::::..f.::::::.*.::::::.:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::,:::::*:::::.,...........,:.::::::::::::::::::::::::.::::.:::::::::,....:.....*:.*::::::::::,:::::*I:i*....::::::... t4til ' •,4 fi✓ :•: i:;: y :i:X • '........:::::::::::11.....1.,,ii.i..,:::::!.........,.....,...;?....:::.................:::::::::.......?...................:...i.........::::$......... ...- „,. • : •Y$i:•rL:?:.•:}i .m.: ,111.i,..1.1111...::::::::,..fill:::: :L•::''ir:;L•::•:i;{•}}' :i i .'::•i::i:+:•}:: i:$:;:;: i;i :$ ;:;C :i :i;iiiiiiinitstiel • :.p • lJ;ii:i: i s.... ..... •.•L•••• •••• • GAmesop BRING YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS Kinsmen Summerfest Refreshment Tent, Team entry fee $10.
