Port Elgin to host
annual S.ortsfest on
August 15-17 weekend
The Town of Port Elgin-, on the friendly
shores of Lake Huron, extends a warm in-
vitation to one and all to join us for the 10th
anniversary of the Lake Huron Zone
Recreationists Association (LHZRA)
"Sportsfest," set for the weekend of
August 15, 16 and 17.
For those not familiar with Sportsfest,
it's a weekend festival / of sports and
recreational activities, deigned primarily
for recreational and hquse league level
participants. The idea of "winning at all
costs" is put on the back burner, with par- .
ticipation and fun for all becoming the
main objectives.
,,,Sportsfest came into being in 1976 as a
series of events held in different locations
in the LHZRA area, which includes the
Counties of Bruce, Grey, Huron, Perth and
Wellington. The area stretches from
Tobermory in the north, to St. Marys in the
south, and east from Lake Huron to Ar-
thur. The Town of Kincardine was chosen
as the site of the first combined Sportsfest
in 1977, with approximately 1,300 par-
ticipants involved in 15 events.
The torch was passed to Port Elgin for
the 1978 Sportsfest, and since then it has
been held in Listowel, Goderich, Owen
Sound, Hanover, Seaforth, Kincardine
(again) and Exeter. Sportsfest '84, in Kin-
cardine, was the biggest event with some
3,500 participants. Organizers for this
year's event hope to top the 4,000 mark in
participation.
Since it is the' 10th anniversary of the
event, the organizers of Sportsfest '86, are
planning to make it the biggest and best
yet. Plans currently call for a list of 39
events, including ladies' softball and slow -
pitch, men's slow -pitch, ' youth soccer,
men's and unonboys' basketball,
curling,
darts, chess, euchre, bridge, shuffleboard,
long distance swim, minor softball,
- children's T -ball, bowling, racquetball,
squash, boardsailing, soapbox derby,
team aerobics, water polo, women's soc-
cer, canoe race, karate, junior golf, ball
hockey, badminton, 10 k run, beach
volleyball, tennis, swim meet, table tennis,
oldtimers' soccer, mini golf, horseshoes;
bike rodeo, fun run, lawn bowling, and a
mini triathlon.
As you can see from the aforementioned
list of events, the organizers have
something of interest for just about
everyone, which is why this year's logo in-
cludes the phrase, "All Sorts Of Sports For
Sports Of All Sorts." weekend is
A highlight of any Sportsfest
the traditional Saturday evening dance,
which this year will take the form of a
Giant Beach Party on Port Elgin's main
beach. Camping facilities are also
available for those wishing to stay the en-
tire weekend in Port Elgin.
All Sportsfest participants will receive a
Sportsfest button, with medals, trophies
and pins going to the successful in-
dividuals and teams. Spectators are .also
more than welcome to join in the fun and
enjoy themselves in the refreshment
gardens.
Sportsfest entry packages are now
available, at your local Recreation Office:
The deadline for entries this year is Fri-
day, July 18, and there will be no exten-
sions to that deadline.
Sportsfest relies on the participation of
all to achieve success. For more informa-'
tion and entry forms contact the Goderich
Recreation . Department, 524-2125. Mark
August 15, 16 and 17 on your calendar and
help make the 10th annual Sportsfest the
best yet.

Atoms and Squirts all saw
pienty of action last week
the fine defensive performances of full
back Mark Hoy and centre -half Jason
Meriam.
In Squirt House League action last
Wednesday, Giants maintained their three
point lead at the top of the league. In the
first game they beat Bombers 2-0, with
Matt "Speedy" Hunter scoring both goals.
However they stumbled in the,second
game, losing to the rapidly imroving
Raiders 2-0. Karen Harrison and Terry
Pardys scored the goals for the Reds. This
win moved Raiders into sole possession of
second place, two points ahead of
Bombers.'
Goderlch Mosquitos defeated Seaforth
7-3 in a game played in Goderich last Tues-
day. Slick centre -forward Drew Macaulay
scored three goals, with centre -half Jamie
lj,edmond and outside -left Colin Beier not-
ching two apiece. Redmond, centre -back
Leslie Brereton, and right -back Leander
Campbell were defensive standouts. Coach
Jeff Surridge was pleased with his team's
fighting come back after they had trailed
2-0 after ten .minutes of play.
On ,Thursday,, the Atoms travelled to
Seaforth and lost 6-1. Darryl Fielder
scored the lone Goderich goal. The Atoms
had a number of key players missing for
this game, but coach Al Fisher -did mention

Student vs Employer
soccer game is a big success
•
The Canada Employment Centre for
Students (CECS) would like to thank all
the employers, representatives, students
and Spectators who attended the Hire -A -
Student soccer challenge on Monday, June
23.
The employers fielded a strong side and
played well throughout but in the end,
younger legs prevailed. The final score
was 2-1 for the students. (This is not the
real score, however we hope that some of
the employers will hire students so we
don't want t embarrass them.) The
Goderich Old , Timers soccer club have
hinted that'a i'Emetch may be in the works.
Such a game would surely rival the World
Cup for excitement.
The student office'' is enjoying a very
good year in terms of student placements
thanks to a strong economy and a great
response from the community. We hope
this trend will continue in July.
Homeowners are encouraged to consider
student wotkers to help out with odd jobs
around the home and cottage. Remember
no job is too small.
