In 1946.w'
Sunday morning was bright, sunny and
warm. We headed for the breakfast with oar
friends, the Lions! What a nice surprise, but
how could 1 make a 'mistake on the location?
Well, Walt hadn't been to the harbor for a
long time and I drove - WAy OUT - at St.
Christopher's Beach so, we could see the
ravages of the winter" against the cliffs.
There is a lot 9f hard work being done down
there and I hope everyone appreciates it.
Hopefully no more of the cliff will be lost.
About 1948 I sat at the first lookout above
the harbor and -I painted the whole thing just
as it was in 1946 when we first saw it. I sold
that oil painting and had only a black and
white of it so I started another oil a couple of
weeks ago. I hate sitting around. •
Several days later it was more or less
finished and I hung it on thebig easels and
people just wouldr believe me that it had
been our harbor. New, all the little houses
are gone - even that leaning, tiny one - and
the big one where the young people had so
much fun after swimming. The juke box was
there as well as pop and dancing.
Now, I must find the painting. I did of
what is now, St. Christopher's beach. They
won't believe it, either. In '46 there was just
a path down there - not too good for cars as
the big trees leaned 'way out and there were
a lot of them. Where the road is now - at the
bottom .of Britannia Road, there was a mar
shy spot.
I was told the frogs were the biggest and
they were certainly the loudest - but I had.
neverseen any of them. One day I decided to
try to sneak in real close and watch for
them.
Everytime one surfaced or could have
been seen, I'd move closer and those darned
red -winged blackbirds would be just above
my head and they'd warn the frogs. All I
heard was a big splash! •
The many changes around town, really
have excited me. I just know we are headed
for bigger and better things. We have waited
for it a very Iong time, haven't we?
I hope they do build a new fire hall - don't
you? The Port of Goderich will be a very
special town and I hope I'm around to enjoy'
it. Love you all,
Martha.
