To say Dan Maloney and Jac old ues Demers are lucky, is like saying rd is a bit overweight. ' •Both coaches recen y e ew jobs a the helmsof the Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues over contract disputes. The Blues wouldn't pay Demers the money he wanted and the Leafs wouldn't provide Maloney with the multi-year contract he required to stay on. No tsars shed here for the plight of the Leafs the Blues. " Both men deserved better treatment than they were getting from their respec- tive managements. Demers was the lowest paid coach in the NHL, making a scant $70,000 in leading his team to within a hair of the Stanley Cup Finals The poer shake that Maloney got in Toronto goes without saying -but .I'll say it anyway. With the media calling for his head when the Leafs were floundering and the spectre of Ballard constantly hanging. over him, it'sa wonder that Maloney' stuck . around; long enough to guide the -Leafs past the Hawks. • There's really no excuse for either team's management. Both had something good going by the end of the season, To preserve the situation they had only to make a few concessions. ' That they refused,is testament to 'the poor attitude that prevails in the front. of- fices of the two cities. Money, not winning, seems to be the • top priority. Why else would each let go of a successful coach just when their teams were .getting turned around. It baffles me. Luckily, it hasn't seemed to stymie Maloney or Demers. Their solution? Take their skills elsewhere where, they'll be appreciated. • In Detroit, Demers 'will get the money that he's been looking for. And, whereas the Blues will find it difficult to repeat the success they enjoyed last year, the hapless Wings have nowhere to go but up. Demers can't lose. Maloney was unemployed 'for less than two days before he landed a job with John and his Jets. It tends to make One wonder whether he didn't have the position lined up before he told Fat Harold, where to put his one-year contract. In Winnipeg, Dan will have the benefit of a three-year pact and peace -of -mind know- ing that Ballard will no longer be breathing down his neck. Besides, the Leafs, like the Blues, will be hard-pressed to do as well as they did this past season. If Maloney stayed on as coach and the Leafs didn't start the season by burning up'the league, he'd have the same people once again calling for his head. More power to these guys in their new jobs.
