Opinion
Goderich is committed to excellence
BY MIKE FERGUSON
Word has it that Goderich is the "best
damn little town" in the province, and I
couldn't agree more.
This town's commitment to excellence
never ceases to amaze, and delight me. As
-more than an interested observer, this
writer has a unique perspective on whether
last week's article in the London Free Press
has any merit. I know everyone read it
because being acknowledged by a "big city"
paper just makes you feel good and proud
about where you have chosen °to raise a
family or run a business.
In my life of a couple decades and change,
I have lived in six different municipalities in
this province, both large and small. I can
readily appreciate what 'this town here on
the banks of Lake Huron has going for it.
For instance, the vast majority of
residents genuinely care about their lawns.
The mystery lies in the knowledge that the
versatile broom is being extensively utilized
to sweep the green grass plots of
householders.
Champion's importance to the town needs
no elaboration. Its success attracted Flora
MacDonald herself last month to announce
a new program. Road graders built here can
be seen almost everywhere in -the province.
The people Champion employs include
many' professionals who greatly enhance
the cultural activities and other more
_; aesthetiq.pursuits of the town.

Per capita, Goderich just has to have the
niost ball teams of all descriptions than any
other town of it size. The "play ball" credo
must be constantly instilled in newborn
babes right at birth. The state of recreation
is in good hands in this town.
The Recreation Board is currently under-
taking a study to determine the town's
future needs and priorities for leisure time.
The master plan, as it is called, depends in
large measure on public input. If you have
an idea about what Goderich needs or what
can be improved, I'm sure the Rec Board
will be very responsive. '

master plan is a prime master is a prime example.
The town is taking the bull by the horns
an s , ; nning now for the future. 'It's a study
tha'won't sit on the shelf" when finally
completed this Fall.
From Ottawa cabinet ministers to big city
newspapers to surrounding towns, people
are noticing just how unique Goderich
It's gratifying to notice the intensity of pride
residents feel about "the prettiest town in
Canada." Everyone, from the Mayor and
Town Council on down to the cashier at the
corner store, ought to take time Out to pat
themselves on the back today for commit-
ting themselves to excellence. The future is
at hand, and it's sparkling.
A two floor complex with tennis courts,
dance floor and swimming pool was an idea
mentioned by the majority of residents who
attended a master plan meeting last week.
There was a sense everyone in attendance
was committed to Goderich and en-
thusiastic about taking on the future right
now.
In years to come, trivia masters will have
questions 'about the number of champion-
ships, titles and assorted other victories that
good of GDCI has captured. It is a great
testimony to the fact of teachers and
students alike gunning for glory, of taking
time out of their lives to create a better
track team, or football, basketball, tennis or
soccer team.

student is to hurry up and get a job and get
out. But no longer does it astound me how
many university graduates come back to
their home town of Goderich to renew the
heritage of excellence. Each generation of
Goderichites builds and learns on the suc-
cesses and mistakes of the past.
That's the way it's supposed to work, but
many other towns are labouring under the
weight of their own constraints. They are
afraid of the future if it doesn't gel with the
present. Goderich is different, and the
