Special equipment •
is installed
to monitor
Great Lakes
flood conditions
A network of six wave -rider buoys is being
installed on Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, Lake
Huron, Georgian Bay and Lake Superior to
monitor wave heights in flooding areas, as
additional support for the emergency Great
Lakes water level forecast program, En-
vironment Minister Tom McMillan an-
nounced'. The buoys should be fully opera-
tional by the middle of June.
McMillan said seven coastal automatic
weather stations will also be installed to
monitor winds and other weather conditions
in critical areas. "One of the new stations
has already been placed on- the southern
coast of Lake St. Clair," he said. •
"Water levels on the Great Lakes are still
at record high levels and pose a threat to
surrounding residents. Weather and sea
state information from this equipment will
greatly assist forecasters at Environment
Canada's Great Lakes Water Level
Forecast Centre in Toronto in issuing lake
level forecasts and warnings."
McMillan added that a number of federal,
provincial, municipal and private agencies
are co-operating in this venture.
The Great Lakes water level forecast pro-
gram was created in up to-dateinformation t March residents in flod-
risk areas.
