"Cancer does not strike at an organ. It
strikes a person, a family and society."
This opening remark by Dr. Martin
Barkin, President , Sunnybrook Medical
Centre, set the tone for the 'Second Cana-
dian Psychosocial Oncology Conference:
Interdisciplinary Approached to Cancer
Care'. All too' often the emotional and
social needs of the family and patient are
overlooked. The conference addressed
these" issues and attracted professionals
and volunteers from all parts of Canada.
Connie Osborn, Consultant in Palliative
Care, Keller 'and Osborn Associates, at-
tended from the local area.
The Conference speakers and the
workshops explored some of the following
topics: The Evolution of Cancer Medicine: -
Implications for psychosocial interven-
tion; Professionals from various
„disciplines with trained volunteers along
with the assistance of self help groups
compose an interdisciplinary team to
more effectively meet the needs of cancer
patients, beginning at the time of
diagnosis. In-depth sessions were given on
the `Techniques for making a Team work
in Psychosocial Oncology'.
The value of an interdisciplinary ap-
proach compared to the traditional struc-
ture lies within the concept that a common
thread runs through the team in that there
is group responsibility to meet the goals of
the patient and family. Greater com-
munication exists between team members
and they are able to meet the changing
demands, with some degree of overlapping
roles and variations which all serve to
lessen the anxiety of the patient and fami-
ly. There are a good number of indications
that the mental health of the patient and
family have a bearing on recovery. Nor-
man Cousin's book, An Anatomy of an Il-
lness documents this fact. This book is
available at the local library: Cousins talks
about the healing power of tears and
laughter, and he equates laughter with in-
ner . jogging, which releases ' healing
chemicals into the body.
Other topics covered were - how to pro-
vide services to remote and rural areas;
the role of volunteers and self - help
groups; spiritual issues for patients and
staff; do medical ethics make a difference
in caring for cancer patients? What are the
health risks to the caregiver in caring for
patients with infectious diseases?,, and
quality assurance - the fundamentals of
implementing a program in an inter-
disciplinary setting.
Quality assurance in hospitals involves
setting up guidelines of Standards of Care.
These standards are a guarantee to pa-
tients and families, the Provincial and
Federal government, Health Insurance
Companies and hospital accreditation
bodies, that 'certain standards of ex-
cellence are being met in the care

hospitals deliver. Care must be safe, effec-
tive and necessary. The program is to en-
sure good quality of health care. Two com-
ponents are used to accomplish, this goal -
1. Assessing care and utilizing the results
to improve the total effect of the program
and 2. - if assessment and improvement is
ongoing, costs are decreased and it im-
proves the quality of care for patients and
families.
The closing session included a panel
discussion of professionals, and volunteers
from the Cancer Society, and an important
focus was placed on person to person sup-
port by recovered cancer patients and
their role in hospitals as well as the value
of self-help groups following surgery and
treatment.
During the conference a Canadian
Association of Psychosocial Oncology was
formed. Its objectives are to provide a na-
tional network to exchange ideas between
clinicians, reasearchers and educators; to
foster interdisciplinary collaboration in
cancer clinics and services, and to be con-
sultants to its members as well as to
Federal, Provincial and local programs.
The Conference was sponsored by Sun-
nybrook Medical Centre, Toronto -Bayview
Regional Cancer Centre and the Universi-
ty of Toronto.
