(photos by Susan Hundertmark) NATIONAL TRUST A Division of National Victoria and Grey Musico 100 Kingston St., Goderich 524-7381 TOWN OF GODERICH NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE HERITAGE BUILDINGS in the matter of The Ontario Heritage Act, 1980, R.S.O., Chapter 337, Part 4, And in the matter of the lands and premises set out below, in the Province of Ontario: NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE. Take notice that the Council of The Cor- poration of the Town of Goderich, on the 9th day of June, 1986, decided to designate the lands and buildings, set out below as a property of historical value in interest under The Ontario Heritage Act, 1980, R.S.O., Chapter 337, Part 4. Short statement of the reasons for the proposed designation: THE JUDGES' HOUSE, 85 Essex Street, is designated for architectural and historicalreasons. This is a superb example of a white brick High Victorian struc- ture, with a Gothic Revival Flavour and what mayvariously be described as Tudor Revival or Itallanate feature , The simple facade derives Its elegance from the sym- metry of the three -bay face, which although rare, is not uncommon as aclassic building type of the late 1870's. The symmetry is further emphasized by the square bay windows at the first floor as well as the central porch (which was probably a later addition) under the central dormer. The massing Is lightened by the delicacy of the were wooden bargeboards and rails over the bay windows. The building's peaks originally enhanced by decorative gingerbread trim or carpenter's lace. Of the Judges who presided over Huron County from Confederation to 1978, fbur resided suc- cessively in this residence. County Judge Wilmot Squier built the residence in 1877 and he was followed by His Honour James Masson, Judge E.N. Lewis, M.P. and Judge Glen Hays. The current owners are Crown Attorney Robert N. Morris and Barrister and Solicitor, Sharon Morris. THE FORD HOUSE, 34 Wellington Street, is designated for architectural reasons. This Ontario style cottage is notable for its palladlan dormer and for Its wood ashlar siding. The design of the dormer adds considerable and unique character to the structure, which was built In the mid•nineteenth century. (The palladlan dormer Is thought to be a later addition). The siding, imitating stone coursing and usually made from pine, Is found in Goderich in structures dating from the mid -nineteenth century into the early twentieth century and is a material not commonly found In parts of Ontario. The simple proportions and elegance of the structure make It an Important component of the streetscape of Goderich. In fact there were two spokespersons, Debbie Selkirk and Fran McQuail. The story also stated Fran McQuail was president of Women Today, when in fact she is past president. Debbie Selkirk is president. Women Today held a special workshop to gather the personal experiences of women in Huron •County with child care- problems. They especially enjoyed the "Ah Haa" technique, which was used to illustrate the women's child care difficulties and needs on a large mural. Fran and Debbie used the mural to demonstrate the women's con- cerns to the task force. celebrates 78t birthday Goderich Rebekah Lodge 89 celebrated its 78th birthday party.
