The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-06-18, Page 5a pinl®n 0 er resents comments mments m. Iney is the only concern Dear editor, I would like to make a few comments in regard to last week's article concerning the K Day Care Centre. First of all I deeply resent Linda Donald's comment that "the majority of babysitters only want the money; they don't care too much about the children." I am a babysitter and am curious to know just how she arrived at this conclusion. Has she had her child to every babysitter in town? Did she do her own private survey? If she did, she missed me. I would also like to continent on the remark made by Brenda Russell. She says, "the day care workers are not doing housework like babvsitters rho " If she was peeking in my windows observ- ing me while I was `babysitting it was without my knowledge. None of my neighbors reported seeing anyone prowling around my house. I resent the fact that I feel the need to de- fend myself and I imagine there are many others who feel the same way. They wrote all their horror stories in the newspaper for everyone to read but I think there are probably babysitters, out there who could do the same thing concerning the parents. I know some mothers have to work, they have no choice, but for those who don't have to work, if things are that bad with babysit- ters, maybe some of them should consider staying home with their children. I realize these people are not speaking for everyone who wants the day care centre. I also believe that there is a need for a day care centre in Goderich, but mudslinging directed at the Kinsmen Club and babysit- ters is not the solution. I sincerely hope these people get to keep their day care centre because 1 really wouldn't bless some of them on any babysitter. Finally, if the day care centre does care, I'm curious to know what good babysitter would be willing to work for some of them after an article like that. Pauline Vanstone Women working is inescapable fact require nelnrr'i ra rs h r® Dear editor, It has come to my attention that the K - Day Care Centre in Goderich has been given notice by the Kinsmen Club to vacate the Kinsmen Centre where they have been located for the past year and that so far the staff have 'been unable to find alternative accommodation. Although I have no direct connection with the Day Care Centre, I feel I must voice my concerns as 'a citizen who believes in the great importance of a good day care system in today's society. Let's examine some facts. A government sponsored survey states that in 1981 only 11 per cent of families fell into the stereotype where the husband goes out to work and the wife stays at home with the children. Also over 50 per cent of women now work outside the house. Whether one approves of it or not, it is an inescapable fact that more and more women are entering the work force and therefore more and more children are needing proper day care facilities. If there are no such facilities what hap- pens to these children? If they are lucky, their parents, or parent if they are a single -parent family, may find someone who is willing to care for the children in an acceptable manner. Such situations do exist and some parents are lucky enough to find very good babysitters, however such situations can be very hard to find. This I can vouch for from personal ex- perience in the past and from the experience of many other parents I have talked to. More commonly the care provided can be inadequate, unsafe and unreliable. Fre- quently children are left in front of a T.V. set for long periods of time and occasionally children are left on their own. I believe that a day care centre run by an accredited staff which provides a safe, car- ing and stimulating environment for the children is a necessity which we cannot af- ford to be without in Goderich. Yours Sincerely, Alison Hollingworth. Day care should not be subsidized, users should pay the full cost Dear editor, In response to the article in last week's paper concerning the K Day Care'Centre, by Susan Hundertmark, I d like to make two comments. Firstly, the Kinsmen Club of Goderich is a service organization not a charitable foun- dation. There is a difference and perhaps, the reporter should investigate. Secondly, the operators of this day care were doing so as a business venture and so, therefore, were the Kinsmen. When Cathy DeJong and Cindy Austin realized that they were not able to meet their financial com- mitments by charging $65 per week per 'child, perhaps the fee should have been in- creased to $100 so that they would have am- ple funds to pay their bills and make a reasonable return for their time and effort. I do not feel that a municipality, a service organization or any other group should be subsidizing the costs of day care. Taxes are high enough now without this added burden. The users should pay the full cost. After all, they benefit the most. D nt y wish everything you own had a guarantee like this? CCC,.- SC, C.115SOCC C.^pCC SCCn CCC CC SC L' G. Paolin R.R. 6, Goderich Parents require affordable, quality day care for children Dear Editbr, As parents of two three -year-olds atten- ding the K -Day Care Centre in Goderich, we would like to expressour concern at the closing of the centre on July 31. The circumstances surrounding the eviction of Cindy Austin and Cathy DeJong are very upsetting. The Kinsmen Club has certainly "tarnished its image" in our eyes, and we are sorry that it is the children of Goderich and its surrounding areas that are affected by its plans. In a society where many parents both have to work to support their family, a service such as this is vital. Quality, affordable municipally -funded day care has been available for many years in Wingham and Vanastra. We feel Goderich, with a much larger population, and a large drawing area, deserves the same service. We hope that town council will support us in this important task. Yours sincerely, Debbie and Ken Selkirk Reader pleads with young drivers to stop speeding on her street Dear editor, On Tuesday, June 10 I rushed to my front door after hearing squealing tires and a ter- rific crash. My three-year-old son was riding -his bike on the front side walk so I was terrified. Two truckloads of teenagers, one- coming from school, one going, had been playing "chicken" and had crashed head-on at the end of our driveway. By the grace of God, my little boy was sit- tina on the front porch or he could have been seriously injured. My son's, two little friends who are also usually there could also have been hurt. I remarked to the first young man, who looked fine as he got out of the truck, that he was lucky he didn't hurt my son who was just playing there. He said something like "yeah good thing hah. hah!" On different occasions I have phoned the police about these tire squealing speeders on South Street but nothing has helped. It's hard to get license plates because they drive. too fast. All I can do is plead with these kids to slow down before they kill themselves,or some in- nocent bystander. When these are gone ... there will not be any more of this type. available.
