Dear editor,
The Kinsmen Club
of appro
rGoderich is a group
oung men belonging to
nap nal organization that has as their
slogan - serving the community's greatest
need. To this end they give freely of their
time and energy in a variety of ways to raise
money for charities and other worthy
causes.
The Kinsmen Club of Goderich has sup-
ported minor sports, bought an ice rriachine
for the arena, donated to the hospital, raised
money for the Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis
Societies, sponsored awards at area schools,
and operate a neighborhood playground on
Keays Street. The list is extensive. We do
not receive public accolades or massive
media attention for our deeds, nor do we ex-
pect it. The people we help appreciate us
and the good feeling we get from -helping is
our reward. We are a volunteer group -
Kinsmen is not the main thrust of our lives,
we have jobs, families, and other interests
in the community.
If you read the newspaper or watched the
local T.V. channel last week your impres-

ferent than that above. We have been sub-
jected to a large amount of negative press,
and verbal harrassment. We do not intend to
engage in a battle of mudslinging or name-
calling. We do want to present our side of the
issue and clear up our image.

' Initially the women called it the Kinsmen
Day Care Centre and made a sign and
advertised to this effect. They, were im-
mediately informed not to use the Kinsmen
name as we had no connection to a private
business or any implied liability. Hence the
K Day Care Centre.
In November 1985 we started negotiations
to draw up a lease for a longer term. We
wanted to devote our time and thoughts
elsewhere. We asked for a one year lease at
$750 a month. Once again we were asked to
accept less rent as their attendance was not
what they anticipated. We reconsidered and
asked for $600 a month but the tenants would
not sign a one year lease. The lease was
signed for a six-month period. The first and
last months rent was required as well as
payment in advance on the first of the
month. The last months tent was never
received and payments have been sporatic.
The rent included heat and hydro, clean-
ing supplies, snow removal, grass cutting,
full kitchen facilities - stove, fridge, freezer
and equipped playground. Our operating
costs for the building are in the $12,000 range
(this does not include accounting for
maintenance such as a new of, paved
ed
parking lot, or playground upgrading.)
We
expected rental income to cover these costs
or better, but we did realize the operation
would need time to establish. We were hap-
py to have a tenant to cover costs to some
