Crocker Rector, St. George's Anglican Church Someone said to me just recently that he wished his doctor would not use such long words when trying to describe medical pro- blems. It made me feel guilty, because I use sesquipedalian words too. Sesquipedalian (literally a foot -and -a -half) is just a big word for long words, and I could easily say the same'thing without showing off. Sometimes a new word is invented which fills a need. An example is the word "sibl- ing" which means either a brother or a sister without having to indicate which. And today I came across a new word "syn- categorematic', meaning - things which which cannot be defined outside their con- text. Basically it means a word which can- not be defined, or have any meaning outside the sentence which contains it. My dictoinary does not include the word, so I cannot be sure. What appealed to me was the idea expressed about lack of defini- tion and meaning when removed from pro- per environment. In the same way, no child of God, no Christian, has any relevance all by him or herself. ii First Baptist Church i} t MONTREAL STREET, GODERICH L d MORNING WORHSIP SERVICE 9:45 a.m. Sunday School 11:00 a.m. 7Tuesday 10:00 a.m. PRAYER & BIBLE STUDY 7 ( PASTOR: REV. W...o..• 1 MINISTER'S STUDY The context of a Christian is described in different ways. The kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, God's grace, creation, the Church, are all terms used to express the human and Christian context of our 'Wes in which we express both our individuality and our togetherness. Something of the same sort is expressed in the saying that there is no such thing as a Christian on a desert island. One cannot be a Christian all alone, or even a Christian with God alone. You cannot be a mother or a father unless there is at least one child, a sister or a brother without at least one sibling, or a son or a daughter without a parent. Similarly you cannot be a Christian without . the necessary context of God and one's fellow Christians. I didn't need the long word, but I did need the idea it expresses.
