Mary Lynne Telford admires the plaque she received from the Royal Doulton figurine from her students and a bouquet from the
Town of Goderich and the Co s unity Centre Board, recognizing Laketown Band. The gifts were presented at the annual highland

BY PAUL HARTMAN
When Mary Lynne Telford stepped up to
the microphone at the McKay Hall last Mon-
day night ghe was somewhat surprised by
the turnout for her class' annual recital.
She was also surprised bythe number of
cameras that were aimed at her and the
secretive glances passing between her
students. None of these things had ever been
present at any of the other 20 or so recitals
that Mary Lynne had overseen.
But, then again, this was no ordinary
recital.
On May 26, a crowd of 140 wellwishers
gathered at the McKay Hall to com-
memorate . Mary Lynne's 30th year of
teaching highland dance., Of course, Mary
Lynne was the only person present who
didn't know what,>he,occasion was,
By the halfway i3ii2 ilt of the evenings pro-
gram, however, the'secret would be kept no
longer.
Don McMillan, a representative of the
Goderich Laketown Band, took over M.C.
duties. He proceeded to relate a few,anec-
dotes regarding Mary Lynne's dance career
and then introduced Ron Klages.
Mr. Klages, representing the Town of
Goderich, presented Mary Lynne with a pla-
que from the Town and Community Centre
Board; honoring her for her years of
outstanding service.
Karen Yeo than danced a tribute to her
former teacher, a selection Karen had
choreographed herself. She was provided
with bagpipe accompaniment by Glen
McGregor.
Along with the plaque, Mrs. Telford was
presented with a Royal Doulton figurine by
her students and a bouquet of flowers by the
Laketown Band.
The ev@ning ended with the completion of
the recital by this year's class.
Refreshments were served after.
Among the spectators who turned out to
honor Mary Lynne were 20 of her former
students.
Over the past thirty years she has taught
highland dance to well over, 1,000 people and
she continues simplybecause she enjoys it.
"I only charge enough to pay the his at
the Hall she "confides", that way, anyone
who wants td learn highland dance, cannot
just those who can aftord it".
She notes that highland dancing is one of,
if not the most difficult forms of dance. "It
requires a lot of dedication, energy and
stamina", she explains.
When she gets the opportunity Mary
Lynne still likes to step. down from her
teaching duties and perform herself.
One of her former teachers, J. L. MacKen-
zie a native of Scotland is still dancing at
80, after breaking his hip six months ago.
With inspiration like that Mary Lynne
Telford may still be teaching for another
thirty years.
