Striker Todd Graham. paced the Viking attack with three goals. Graham finished the season with a total 17 goals.in the 10 games played by the Vikings. The Vikings won seven of eight games in , the regular schedule to finish first in the league. They then defeated Stratford Cen- tral 1-0 in the semi-final here Wednesday. This set up their final game with the Pan- thers who defeated Stratford Nor- thwestern 6-2 in the other semi-final. The Vikings fell behind 1-0 Friday when the Panther's Dorkeo Chansemome took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Vik- ings' fullbacks toscore the game's first goal. Before the end of the first half however, the Vikings had taken a com- manding 3-1.1ead. Graham scored on a free kick from just outside the 18 yeard line at the 10 minute nark. Nicola Glatfeld then gave the Vik- ings the lead when his long kick bounced over the Exeter keeper's head. Graham got his second goal of the game with a strong left-footed kick which went inside the far goal post. The Viking's Chris Sideris upped the Goderich lead to 4-1 when he headed in a free kick from Todd Graham from deep in the Exeter and early in the second half. Todd Graham put an end to any Panther hopes when he took a pass from Glatfeld and beat Dave Cougall, the Exeter keeper, with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Scott Miller got Exeter's final goal, heading in a corner kick four minutes later. But the Viking's strong defensive play hut down the Panthers for the remain- ing minutes. The Vikings had a tough time getting by a stubborn Stratford Central side in the semi-final. The teams bottled through 65 minutes of scoreless soccer before the Vik- ings Darren Doak connected for the game's only goal. Viking half -back Bob Barwick then came through with an outstanding play, behind Viking. got 1 whichg. out a bill kicking keeper Kevin Telford and was rolling toward the goal line. The senior soccer championship was the first for GDCI since 1977. The Vikings finished first three of the last four seasons under dercoach Dick Madge, but failed to ad- vance past the semi-finals, in the playoffs. A combination of desire, dedication and discipline were , the keys to the Vikings' success in achieving their goals. The help of long-time local soccer coach Ed Smythe who served as a technical advisor to the team was also an important factor. The championship concludes a long list of Huron -Perth titles won by GDCI teams this year. Junior and Senior football teams, the senior NV! . cross , country team, senior girl's cross country team, senior girl's and senior boy's basketball teams, senior boys track and field and the overall. track and field championship are among the titles accumulated by GDCI athletes this year. The members of the GDCI senior Viking soccer team are Bob Barwick, Wayne Bos, Brian Chambers, Darren Doak, Pat Frayne, Grant Garrow, Nicolas Glatfeld, tfel d , John Graham, Todd Graham, Shawn Larder, Ian MacKinnon, Carcy McGee, Juergen Schulz, Chris Sideris, Andy Swan and Kevin Telford. The Huron -Perth champions will be tak- ing pat in the WOSSA soccer championship tournament this Friday and Saturday in Sarnia.
