manufacturing plant where she met and
talked with several employees.
Champion and Employment Canada of-
ficials said the program was established in
response to the company's need for skilled
labour and to address some retraining re-
quirements for the company's 650 regualr
employees.
The centre opened in February and during
the first six weeks, trainee -employees
received training in welding, drafting and
blueprint reading. The employees receive
classroom instruction and practical training
and skill development in simulated work
areas in the centre.
The major portion of the work training is
conducted at the Maitland Road manufac-
turing plant and about 20 per cent of the
time is spent at the training centre under the.
guidance of three full-time instructors.
Following approval of the program in
January and subsequent to initial screening

successful 118 trainees. While all the
trainees will not find employment with
Champion at the conclusion of the 49 -week
training session, the candidates will have
acquired some valuable skills and
experience.
Company official Dave Million told Mac-
Donald after the tour that the company
could not have pursued the establishment of
the training centre without government
assistance.
"We wouldn't have liked 80 per cent of the
employees without the employment pro-
gram," he explained. "Some of the trainees
will not make it through the program but I
doubt Champion would have made a move
without the program."
While Million said the company's
employees have had to put in "an excessive
amount of overtime" to compensate for
quality and errors, he added that many of
the candidates would ably augment the
company's work force.
Project leader; Rick Rompf explained that

appraisals of the trainees to ensure they
achieve a job skill proficiency.
Funding for the program is shared by the
company and the government with Employ-
ment Canada spending about $2.5 million to
fund the establishment sof the centre and
subsidize the wages of the trainees. More
than $100,000 is being spent to upgrade the
skills of existing Champion employees dur-
ing the year-long training period,
The program was necessitated by Cham-
pion's decision to downscale its operations
in Columbia, South Carolina and to con-
solidate its manufacturing process in
Goderich.
Huron -Bruce MP Murray Cardiff lauded
the efforts of Champion and the government
in combining to offer a second chance for
employment to many unskilled workers. He
said the jobs at Champion have a great ef-
fect on the entire county.
MacDonald also toured the Canada
Employment Centre in Goderich.
