GDCI Vikings wrap up
first place in standings
The GDCI senior Vikings nailed down
first place in the final standings of the
Huron -Perth Conference soccer league
with a pair of victories over Wingham and
Stratford Central last week.
The Vikings finished their eight -game
schedule with a record of seven wins and
only one defa''their first place finish en-
sures home field advantage for the Vikings
in the playoffs this week. Today (Wednes-
day) the Vikings meet the fourth place
team in a sudden -death semi-final to be
played on the soccer field inside the
racetrack at Agricultural Park at 2 p.m. -
The game will be played there because the
WOSSA Track and Field events will be tak-
ing place at the Vikings.' regular field. The
Huron Perthsoccer final will be played on
Friday. If the Vikings qualify, it will be
played on the GDCI field.
The Vikings defeated Wingham last
Wednesday 4-2 in Wingham. Todd Graham
scored two of the Goderich goals, one on a
penalty kick, to pace the Viking attack.
Nicolas Glatfeld and John Graham scored
the other Goderich goals. Forwards Dar-
ren Doak and Grant Garrow and fullback
Wayne Bos had strong games for the
Vikings.
Against Stratford Central, the Vikings
played one of their best games of the
season. The score was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Todd Graham scored the Vikings' goal,
heading in a corner kick by Grant Garrow.
Paul Schweyer tied the score before the
end of the half, but the Vikings scored
twice in the second half to win it.
Nicolas Glatfeld, an exchange student
from Germany who has been a valuable
addition to the Viking side, used his burn-
ing speed to outdistance the Central
defenders for his goal and then Grant Gar -
row's corner kick went in off the Stratford
keeper's hands for the third Goderich goal.
Centre half Juergen Schulz was a domi-
nant factor in controlling thegame for
Goderich. Goal keeper Kevin Telford also
was solid for the Vikings and his ag-
gressive play took many potential chances
away from the Stratford team
The junior Vikings finished their. season
with a record of four wins, two losses and
two ties. Their playoff status depends on
the outcome of other games Friday for
which results were not known at press
time.
The junior Vikings played to a scoreless
draw against Wingham last Wednesday,
Larry Leppington, the Viking keeper,
played a strong second half to earn the
shutout. Calvin Knight, at fullback, John
Kalbfleisch, at half back, and Ken Webb,
at his forward position, all played well for
the Vikings.
The junior Vikings lost to Stratford Cen-
tral 3-1 here Friday. Todd Clarance scored
all three Central goals and Jim Kelly got
the only Goderich goal.
