Vikings won their third straight overall Huron -Perth Track and Field Championship in dramatic style last week. The Goderich team trailed on the unofficial point total for both days of the meet until the last few events of the meet. The Vikings won the Championship with 527 team points to Madill's 508 and Strat- ford Central's 447. The G.D.C.I . athletes also won the Overall Boys Championship on the strength of an overwhelming 171-83 victory by the Senior Boys who clinched G.D.C.I.'s first Senior Bolt's Huron -Perth Championship. The Vikings lost their Overall Girls title to Stratford Central by a mere 11 pts. There were many fine individual perfor- mances but the day belonged to the Vik- ing. seniors who led the way. The Senior Girls Individual Huron -Perth Champion was sprinter Joanne Campbell. Campbell broke a ten -year-old record_ in the 100 meters to set a new mark of 12.6 seconds. Campbell also won the 200 meters (26.1), the 400 meters (1:03.91, anchored the winning 4 x 100 meter Senior Girls relay team and the second place Open Girls 4 x 400 relay team to amass four firsts and a second. The Senior Boys Indiyidual Champion was Shane Worsell. Worsell won the 800 meters (2:06.3) , the 1500 meters (4:28.9) and lost the 3000 meters in a very close finish to collect two firsts and a second. Worsell's competition for the Senior Boys came from his own teammates on the dominant senior team. In all, Goderich garnered 21 firsts, 17 seconds and 11 thirds in the competition. The Vikings had several "double -gold" winners. Senior thrower Ray Bedard won the shotput (14.82) and the Discus (39.05) . Midget Jennifer Cunningham won the 1500 (5 :17.4) and the 3000 meters (11:27) . Midget Bob Pellow won the 400 meters ( 56.6) and the High Jump (1.75 ). Junior thrower Todd Jeffrey won the shot put (12.90) and the discus (39.60) . Senior sprinter Kevin Beattie won the 100 in (11.4) and the 200 m (23.8) . Other gold medallists were Seniors Shawn Rahbek in the 100 meter hurdles (16.5 ), Baird Robinson in the 400 m (54.4), Scott Stokes in the Javelin (48.21). Junior Greg Townsend won the 3000 meters (10:23). Junior Sprinter Erin Robinson won the 100 meters and tied the record at 12.7 seconds. Robinson was second in the 200 m ( 27.1) and the 400 meters (1:02.1). The Senior Girls 4 x 100 relay team of Krista Collinson, .Erin Robinson, Cathy Marks and Joanne Campbell won in a time of 52.7. 'rhe Senior Boys 4 x 100 relay team of Pete Nivins, Shawn Rahbek, Dave Almasi and Kevin Beattie won in a time of 46.1. Other athletes placing were as follows: In Midget girls: Maureen Stapleton - 2nd (800) , 3rd (1500), 3rd (3000) ; Pam Fritzley - 3rd (400), 4th (200), 6th (100); Krista Col- linson - 3rd (400 mH), 5th (80mH) ; Heather Bogie 4th (100 m), 5th (400 m); Christine Connelly, 6th (800); Jenn Culbert - 6th (80mH) ; Tina Hamilton - 6th (400mH) ; Shelley Adams 6th (shot). In Junior Girls: Debi O'Brien . - 2nd (80mH) ; Heather Murray 3rd (high jump), 4th (discus l: Tanya Jeffrey 4th (javelin); Christine Phillips 5th (1500), 5th (3000), 6th (800); Fiona McMahon 5th (800) and Cathy Marks 5th (100). In Senior Girls: Christine Stapleton - 2nd (javelin), 3rd (shot); Julie Meyers - 5th (3000), 5th (discus); Carolyn Dowds 6th (shot). In Midget Boys: Tim Connelly - grid (800), 4th (1500), 4th (3000); Jeff Boyce - 2nd (100mH) , 6th (100) , 6th (200) ; Craig Wark - 2nd (discus), 6th (shot); Greg Alcock - 2nd (javelin) ; George Sideris - 4th ( shot), 4th (discus) and Bob Pellow 4th (long jump). In Junior Boys: Andy Orr - 2nd (1500), 2nd (3000) , 3rd (800) ; Darryle Bolaski - 4th (200) ; Grant Lounsbury 4th (110mH) ; Jeff MacDonald 5th (110mH) and Todd Jeffrey 5th (javelin) . In Senior Boys: Scott Stokes - 2nd (shot), 2nd (discus); Shawh Rahbek 3rd (100m); Baird Robinson - 3rd (400m1-1), Doug Lounsbury - 3rd (110mH) ; Dave Almasi - 4th (400), 5th (200); Jeff Coulter -4th (800), 6th (1500), 6th (2000 m s/c); Ed Plasschaert - 4th (high jump) ; Ken Logtenberg - 5th (high jump), 5th (pole vault) and Darryl Black 5th (javelin). The Open girls 4 x 400 relay team of Maureen Stapleton, Pam Fritzley, Erin Robinson. and Joanne Campbell placed 2nd. Over thirty of these Goderich athletes will be competing at the W.O.S.S.A. Track and Field Championships held here in Goderich today (Wed.) and Thursday. Nissan records lopsided victory In GMSL action this week, the Parkhouse Raiders opened their season with a 29-6 victory over Local 1863. Goderich Elevators blanked Suncoast Restaurant and Tavern 8-0 and Goderich Chrysler blanked Garb and Gear 16-0 in five. Rob Riehl's newly formed Home Hard- • ware team scored one in the seventh to post an 11-10 victory over the BBs. Dear- born Steelers evened their record at 1 and 1 with a close 5-1 win over the Chiefs. Though the Chiefs are winless in their first two starts, they have displayed good defensive skills. They are a young team that could pose a good B division threat once they catch on to the offensive side of the game. Goderich Nissan scored an unbelievable 19 runs in the first en route to a 28-0 shaf- ting of the Sifto team. Tag Sowerby picked up his, second MVP selection in as many games, as he homered twice.' Ideal Supply spored 8 in the sixth as they defeated the Bulldogs 174 in a game that was much closer than. the score. Canadian Tire edged the Coyotes 16-13 in a game that ' was dominated by home runs and Little Bowl doubled up on Sunnys 26-13 in the final game of the week. Team reps are reminded of the General League meeting Wednesday (today) at 9:00 p.m. at the rec office. Umpires at Signal Star diamond are reminded to drag the diamond after the final game. An .equipment box has been placed out at the Benmiller diamond. A combination lock will be used. A protest committee has been establish- ed. It will be headed up by Dave Cloet and will consist of past executive members. More details will be made available at the general meeting. The GMSL Tournament has been set for the long weekend of August 1-4. Entry forms have been sent to all out of town teams that participated last year. Last year's format will be used once again. En- try fee is $135 with $3275 available in prize money on a pay by win basis; 28 of 32 teams will win money ranging from $25 for one win to $500 for five wins. Each team is guaranteed three games, with the results of your first two games used to classify your team as A -a, A-b,.B-a. or B -b. Goderich participation will be limited to 50 per0ent, or 16 teams, on a first-come first- serve basis. Eligibility for the tournament will be the same as for play-offs.
