When Colonel Ottomar Herrmann and his
family visit Goderich with their magnificent
white Lipizzan Stallions on May 25, it will
give people the opportunity to see this
rarest, most aristocratic breed of horses
perform thrilling feats in their ',airs above
ground" show.
The Huronia Branch of the Ontario
Humane Society is sponsoring a Lipizzan
Horse Show at the Goderich arena as part of
a tour of 23 towns and cities across Ontario
this summer. Money from this tour will go
towards raising funds for the construction of
an Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation Cen-
tre at the Ontario Humane Society's Farm
in Newmarket.
There will be performances at 4:30 and
8p.m., with master of ceremonies Col. Herr-
mann, who helped his.father save the Lipiz-
zans, first from the Nazis by disguising the
white stallions with dirt and dark shoe
polish, and then from the Russians with the
assistance of General George Patton. The
story of their miraculous escape was later
made into Walt Disney's "Miracle of the
White Stallions," in which Col. Herrmann
performs.
The great Lipizzan stallions were created
as a special breed for war as early as 1564.
Their spectacular leaps and plunges were
originally meant for use by mounted riders
to instill terror in the hearts of foot soldiers.
AMO, by rearing and walking on their hind
feet; they shielded the rider from ground
attackers.
Now with war waged by horsemen a thing
of the past, the leaps and plunges the Lipiz-
zans' descendents perform are strictly for
aesthetic beauty, with their nickname of
ballet dancers of the horse world.
Tickets can be purchased in advance from
various outlets to be announced. They are
priced at $7.50 for adults and $5.50 for
seniors and children (five -12 years old).
There will be.no charge for infants under
five. Tickets purchased at the door will cost
an additional $1.00 per person.
Benner himself will present a slide show and
discussion of his work on Saturday at 1 pm
and 3 pm. For children, Warren Robinson
will be spinning yarns on Sunday afternoon
at2pm.
There is no admission charge. Memorial
.Hall is located on the main street in Blyth.
