Harbouraires
perform
The Harbouraires were among the featured performers at Knox Presbyterian Church last
week for the Sound of Goderich concert. The music of The Laketown Band and MacKay
Choristers was also in the air to entertain the audience.( Photo by Mike Ferguson).
Martha's smile starts people talking
The last few weeks have been very in-
teresting. I find myself thinking back -
especially of the last week and wonder if I
have been overly friendly or are so many
people needing an outlet for their thoughts
or "memories".
By lending an ear I've heard some pretty
queer conversations. I have found that iust a
friendly smile can start some of them off -
people I've never met before and will pro-,
bably never meet again. But they go away
smiling and cheerful and my head is swim-
ming with some of their tales.
Last week I helped Mary, the Art teacher,
with her show in a very large Mall
"Sarasota Square" for three days, 9 to 5 -
could have stayed longer but we were going
to Venice for Mother's Day. Hundreds of
people - not just shoppers - were there each
day as the Mall had entertainment for the
`Mother's Day' Specials. It was just great.
After setting up the paintings and a nice
arrangement of the cook bookS .with the
'hand painted' covers, we carried on with
making more `nice' covers. The first day
was a real busy one for us but after that
when people wanted to talk we listened.
I didn't mind people watching .me and I
enjoyed the children's questions and in-
tdrest:1 encouraged -them to take adv age they came to erica: He'd'been in the "Se
-
of the Art period at school and I think Wat-
ching someone at work is just about as good
as a lesson.
Since I left the easel often, to show the
book covers or talk about Mary's paintings,
I'd hear about their relatives who were ar-
tists, great ones, some of them. - and then
they'd start to open up about themselves.
I'm a pretty good listener - I've tried to
recall some of the conversations but luckily
most of them went 'in one ear and out the
other'.
• A white haired, rosy •cheeked little man
got talking. He was 84 - didn't look it - but
how are you supposed to.look at that - or any
- age? Ht' was in a home - and lonely, I
thought - but, he described it as wonderful.
They did everything for him. Meals wepe
good and "of course they keep my social
security and bank account but make you
• feel at home".
ThiS.orae I enjoyed - it =iyes hard. to treat'
away his stories - he should have been on
-. T.V. he had so many experiences to tell.
Later, another day, a man started talking
about my painting. "You're a Canadian" he
remarked and , I was glad to admit it. He
rambled on - he was Italian - a child when
5 year term.

Could speak all these languages besides
good "American", was quite handsome,
looked about 40 but must have been older.
His companions had gone on about their
shopping. He was an interesting talker.
When' his folks caught up with him he told
them - and showed them all about the Cook
Books.
Suddenly there were great happy, loud
voices - from England I was sure. I can't
recall his name but he introduced me to all
his friends and the ones "just over from
England". "I was born in England."
Where? "Tottenham" - well they knew it
well and when they bragged about the "Tot-
tenham Hotspurs" I said "Dad's brother
was on the team - travelled iii Europe with
them" and so on!
Anyway, I was one of their group and I
had to laugh - they mode my day!
