The signs: wind, fire, and speaking in tongues all give witness to the power that has come. The results–the speaking of the apostles, the growth of the church, and the surprising unity— also give clear evidence of the power of the Holy Spirit. We would like to have more of that power in our churches. Closer to home, we would like that power present in our lives. There are weaknesses, temptations, and problems MINISTER'S STUDY that we have not been able to deal with ef- fectively, and in each case, the power of the Holy Spirit would be the solution. Not that all our problems would be over. God has not promised us a problem -free life, but through the power of the Spirit we would experience more strength in the Christian life and more success in dealing with the power of evil. How does one receive the power of the Spirit? If you want to receive the power, you are going to have to pray. Jesus told his disciples to stay in Jerusalem until they received the power, and they were constant- ly in prayer until the day off Pentecost. The same pattern emerges elsewhere to Acts. First the prayer, and then the power. The Lord Jesus emphasized that God delights in giving his Spirit and power to those who ask. Remember -how Jesus said: "If you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask." Today we have all kinds of power available --mechanical power, electric power, and nuclear power. The power we need more than anything else is the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to pray and to ask God that this power may descend on our lives.
