Location for
BMX jump
up an the air
A location for a BMX jump is still up in
the air after Goderich council filed a
recommendation from the recreation
board that council find a location other
than the agricultural park.
Because of the dangers and policing pro-
blems at the agricultural park, the recrea-
tion board passed a motion disapproving of
the proposed location at its Mar. 27
meeting. The motion encouraged council
to find another location for the BMX jump.
Coun. Bill Clifford said the recreation
board was passing the buck by asking
council to find another location.
"We know the BMX track has already
received considerable discussion at. this
council. The reason we gave it to the
recreation board was to find a location,"
he said.
"By the sounds of it, these riders are go-
ing to be senior citizens before we find
them a jump to practice on," added Coun.
Stan Profit.
Deputy -Reeve John Doherty said the
recreation board did not mean to pass the
buck by referring the matter back to
council.
"We met with the horsemen and they
weren't in favor of having the jump there
(in the agricultural park). We referred the
matter back to council because we're (the
recreation board is) not able to buy land,"
he said.
Coun. John Stringer said setting up a
BMX jiimp would not make the communi-
ty a safer place.
"Facing liability insurance premiums
as councils do, we have the responsibility
to make our community safer. It's not our
responsibility to set up such a track," he
said.
Stringer added that it maybe In the bes
interest of council to have a supervised
jump since councils who are being sued in
the event of an accident should be able to -
tell judges they used "prudent
forethought" in the situation.
Coun. Peter McCauley suggested that
the citizens.who want their children to use
the BMX jump request another spot which
council can then approve or disapprove.

Goderich police must escort the young of-
fender from- London to Goderich for the
court appearance which often takes about 10
minutes, and then •escopt the offender back
to London.. The. cost cannot be reclaimed
under a grant if the offender is under 16
years of age, as it is with offenders over age
16, said Chief King.
The cost so far has been $4600, said King,
which isn't a lot of money but represents a
sizeable chunk out of a police budget.
Champion of The Hill
The. Champion 730A was proudly displayed on Parliament Hill in Ottawa last Wednesday,
after Champion Road Machinery Ltd. of Goderich had hosted the closing reception for the
Canadian Public Works Association (CPWA) three-day equipment show and conference.
The 730A, emblematic of the company's second century of operation as a , wholly-owned
Canadian manufacturer, was joined by the "Baby Winner" which was included in the
CPWA theme display "Building Our Heritage." Both graders were on display in front of the
Parliament Buildings Wednesday afternoon and several political dignitaries, including
Minister James Kelleher, were photographed with the machines. The Parliament Hill
display was organized by Huron -Bruce MP Murray Cardiff. (photo by • Graham McEwan,
