United Church conference
will focus on environment
The annual meeting of London Conference
of The United Church of Canada will be held
in Central United Church, Sarnia on May 22 -
25. The president, John King of Hickson, has
chosen the theme GOD'S WORLD — OUR
GARDEN which helps the conference look
at the stewardship of land and environment.
The theme speakers will be Dr. Norman
Pearson of London, a world renowned plan-
ner who will speak on "The Historical View
of the Use and Abuse of Land"; The Rev.
Dr. Stephen Dunn, a Christian Ethics Pro-
fessor at St. Michael's College in the Univer-
sity of Toronto, who will speak on
'Theological Principles of Humankind in
Relation to the Land"; and Dr. Richard
Richards of Guelph, the first head Of the On-
tario Agricultural College and Chairman of
the Canadian Agricultural Research Coun-
cil, who will speak on "The Challenge to
Church and Society in Land Stewardship."
The theme for the conference was chosen
in September of 1985 by the president, a
farmer in Oxford County, and his support
committee.
This year six candidates will be ordained
to the ordained ministry and one candidate
will be commissioned to the diaconal
ministry. They are Daniel Bailey of Robin-
son Memorial United Church, London,
Darlene Bamford of Mt. Zion United
Church, London, Michael Bohler of St.
Luke's United Church, Sarnia, Ruth Butt of
Chalmers United Church in Woodstock,
Margaret Moriyama of Victoria Ave. United
Church in Chatham, Lorne Thrower of Hen -
salt United Church and aei rhville United
Church, and the diaconal candidate Aretta
Hagle of Riverside United Church in
London.

of Pres'byterian Church.

The 39th annual meeting of Hamilton and
London Synodical, W.M.S. (W.D.) of the
Presbyterian Church in Canada was held in
St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Welland,
Apr. 22 and 23 with over 200 attending.
The theme "We cannot reach new
horizons if we fear to leave the shore" was
carried throughout all the meetings. Mrs.
Harold Bailey, Welland, President, Niagara
Presbyterian, welcomed all in attendance.
The Rev. Dr. Ray Hodgson, minister of St.
Andrews, brought greetings from Niagara
Presbyterial and Mrs. Kenneth Rayner,
Paris,, Synodical President presided at all
sessions.
Worship services were conducted by
Evelyn Murdock, A.E.C. assisted by
representatives of Hamilton and Niagara
Presbyterials. Bible Study was under the
direction of The Rev. Linda Brown -Ewing,
A.E.C., with representatives from Bruce -
Grey and London Presbyterials. A rousing
sing -song was led by The Rev. Judy Archer -
Green. -
The first Vice President, Mrs. Ronald
Ford, convened the workshops -'"Meet your
Secretaries" assisted by the executive
secretaries. An ethnic dinner was served at
the Hungarian Presbyterian Church, with
the minister, The Rev. Louis Aday, welcom-
ing the delegates.
The Mission Fair was most interesting
and informative with displays from each
Presbyterial. As the study this year is on
Native Peoples, there was a display of In-
dian Crafts, Mrs. A.G. Neal, Sarnia, led the
Memorial 'Service assisted by the
Presbyterial Presidents.
The speaker was the Rev. Linda Ashfield
who spoke on her work in team ministry
with her husband, The Rev. Brook Ashfield
at Gateway Community Church, Toronto.
Gateway Church is a Mission Church with a
goal of being self-supporting in two years.
We are told to go out into the world but they
find the world is coming to them.
The 40th annual meeting will take place in
April, 1987 in Knox Presbyterian Church,
Listowel.
