Cameron's inspiration to write the song came from a person released from an Ira- nian prison who emigrated to Canada. "The story was so compelling—I wrote the song, and the music .industry heard it," says Cameron. J The money, for the video was raised privately by the Bahais with a private film -1 maker, giving it added impetus. "Fortunately, True North North Records releaAed the: song. as a record, and it was now a 'commercial property," says Cameron, indicating a song needs the back- ing of a major record label to ensure any radio play. "The response was much more than what we originally thought would happen. It cer- tainly surprised me," offers Cameron. Cameron's interest in music began at a very early age,in hishome town of Midland, Ontario. "I took piano lessons at the age of foflr, and was always singing," he says, joining rock 'n roll and country bands in his late teens. In the future, Cameron says he wants to do more recording, culminating in the release of an album, and perhaps tour with his three-member band, who will be appear- ing at Ontario Place on May 27. Cameron, 30, says he loves being able to perform for people. "I enjoyed the Goderich audience and that certainly helps a singer." While in the local area, Cameron visited the public schools in Holmesville,. Dungan- non and at Victoria in Goderich. He says he gets many requests for these ,"small-scale, low-key events" to sing and answer Ous- tions from the students. The 'Grade 7 and 8-' classes at Victoria Public School were particularly interested in how the video was made, Cameron says, adding "they had excellent questions." The concert, with proceeds going to Fami- ly and Children's Servicest was arranged by the local Bahai community. Cameron, a Bahai himself, explains his role in the hit song "Mona and the Children" as almost. personal. "Mom's story is universal," he says, ad- ding the music video propelled it onto the charts, making it commercially successful. ' Mona, a Bahai teenage girl from Iran, was incarcerated in prison, and then ex- ecuted. "Previously, most of those killed in the persecuted Bahai community had been PAGE 4A —GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 1986 Let Us Help You Beautify Your Home See Us Soon For The Best Selection! v Box Plants I Hanging Pots v Geraniums fro Begonias v Spikes H1USSER'S GREENHOUSE 156 Eldon Street (Across from Racetrack), Goderich 524-9649 ,' D) D Entertainment ROTA TILLERS °Models from 3'V, to 3 h.p. for every size garden. .Rear Tine, Powered Wheels.
