Business Air Services beacon would be
more acceptable, although he is skeptical
that the lines would not cause technical in-
terference with the beacon.
"If the lines were east of the beacon you
should be above the lines, the
altimeter is out, because youcannot go
below 1600 feet and if the altimeter is out,
you should be no lower than 1300 feet,"
Ward testified.
"It's more critical if the lines are west of
the beacon because you can go down to 519
feet (once you cross the beacon.) and then
if the alixneter is out 200 feet, it becomes
critical." added Ward. dro's
Under cross-examination by Hy
lawyer Bruce Campbell, Ward testified
that it is important to respect the kinds of
limits set out in the regulations by
Transport Canada.
"It is very dangerous and fool hardy to
descend below 1600 feet before you cross
over the beacon, if you do not have visual
sight of the beacon," said Ward.
He also' agreed with Campbell that a
pilot would be in violation of the Transport
Canada regulations to commence an ap-
proach to land without either Goderich or
London altimeter readings, if the pilot is
relying on a non- precision instrument
approach.
Ward said he would not attempt an ap-
proach without the proper information but
his concern is for pilots landing for the first
time at Goderich. They may not have
checked over all the notes on the approach
chart and from his experience and talking
with other experienced pilots, there is
always something you pick up on an ap-
proach you haven't seen before.
Ward testified that Business Air pilots
follow established flying practice, obtain-
ing altimeter readings before making their
approaches. He said he cannot speak for
other pilots not employed by Business Air
Services, but when he is flying he insists on
following procedure, even when he is fly-
ing with other pilots.
To this observation, Hydro lawyer Bruce
Campbell commented if a pilot doesn't
follow procedure, he could get into trouble.
Campbell then asked Ward if he was
aware that the approach charts for the
Goderich -airport had been changed and
the updated chart shows the non- precision
instrument approach to read 1800 feet over
the beacon, not 1600 feet as Ward had
testified.
Ward said ,it was possible and replied
that he does not make a habit of memoriz-
ing approach charts. It is not a good thing
for pilots to do since the charts do change,
said Ward. If a pilot does not memorize the
chart, he will be sure to look it up. -
Campbell said he found it artifzing that 7

altitude over the beacon at his home base.
Ward explained that he had worked out of
the Goderich airport for six years before
moving to Toronto for three
