Dearborn foundeii dies suddenly
ROBERT W. HOTTON
Robert W. Hotton, founder off Dearborn
Steel Tubing in 1958, died at his home in
Tuscon, Arizona on Tuesday, April 22, 1986.
He was 62.
Mr. Hotton had just recently retired from
Hotton Aviation in Tuscon. Just a few days
before his death, he was visiting friends in
Goderich and renewing old memories here.
He is survived by his wife, Fran; two
daughters, Petra and Sandra and a son,
David.
A memorial service was held Tuesday,
May'13, 1986 in Union City, Michigan,
EDNA NICHOLSON
Edna Nicholson, 77, of Goderich, died Fri-
day, May 9, 1986 at the Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital.
Born in Toronto on Feb. 18, 1909, she was a
member of the St. Peter's Roman Catholic
Church in Goderich.
She was predeceased by her first husband
Alexander McPherson and her second hus-
band Thomas Nicholson.
Surviving are one son John McPherson
and his wife Mary, of Corunna, two step-
daughters Dorrine, Mrs. Walter Marco, of
Port Colborne and Rita, Mrs. Howard Hoff-
man, of Toronto, two sisters Mae Byer, of
Okataka, Alta. and Helga Woodhouse, of
Brantford and grandchildren Greg and his
wife Annette Stroudt, of Corunna and great
grandchildren Jeffrey, Katie and Kelly
Stroudt, all of Corunna.
Funeral and committal services were
held at McCallum Funeral Home on Mon-
day, May 12 with Rev. Joseph Hardy, of St.
Peter's Church officiating followed by
cremation. Interment Woodland
Crematorium, London.
MAURICE POIRIER
Maurice Poirier, 53, of Ottawa, died Jan.
6, 1986 in Ottawa.
He was a computer operator with the
federal government.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Ramona Spain, of Goderich, his mother
.Florence Poirier, of Pictou, Nova Scotia,
one son James, of Ottawa, two daughters
Sharon, Mrs. James Wilson, of Ottawa and
Judy, of Ottawa.
Funeral mass was held at St. Maurice
Church in Ottawa. Interment will take place
in St. Peter's Cemetery, Colborne Township
on May 16, at 3 p.m. The funeral home was
Kelly Funeral Home, Ottawa.
JEAN'MAIR
Jean (Bell) Mair, •86, of the Lakeshore
area of Toronto, formerly of Clinton, died
Tuesday, May 6, 1986 at the .Queensway
General Hospital.
She, was predeceased by her husband Carl
Mair.
•Surviving are two daughters Muriel, Mrs.
A Stephens, of Renfrew and Dorothy, Mrs.
George Dvernechuk, of Longbranch, one
brother William Belli of Stayner,. four
grandchildren Ann Millen, Ronald Stephen,
Robert Dverneclruk,,and:;Ju ly Williams,ai d
four great grandchildren Gregory, Robyn,
Tryson and Adam.
Funeral services were held in Toronto on
Thursday, May 8 and at the gravesite at
Clinton Cemetery on Friday, May 9.
Cremation.
LLOYD EVERE ASHTON
Lloyd Everett Ashton f Lucknow, promi-
nentin the business li of the village of
Lucknow for 26 years, d d at the Wingham
and District Hospital on uesday, May 6 at
the age of 72 years.
Mr. Ashton was edited to hospital at
Wingham on April 20 upo return from spen-
ding the winter months at their home in
Florida..He had been hospitalized for three
weeks in Florida but ha been at his Florida
home for two weeks bore returning by
plane, with his wife Eiletn, at their normal-
ly scheduled return date
Lloyd was born in He ick Township on
June 7, 1913, the only child of Hilton Ashton
and Alberta Evans. He Stent his childhood
in the Howick Township-,orrie area, atten-
ding Fordwich and Harriston High Schools.
In January, 1937, he married Janet Ruttan
of Howick Township in Gerrie.
Lloyd worked as a ssles representative
for the Family Herald aid Weekly Star in
Ontario and the Maritirrea and eventually
became a crew manage' with this popular
farm newspaper of that lra. During the se-
cond world war period, he worked in Toron-
to in war work with a firn named Research
Enterprises.
In the mid 1940's, Mr Ashton began a
career that would become his future. As a
salesman for children's wear and dry
goods firms, he travelled this part of On-
tario. During'his calls inLucknow, he saw
the need for a children's wear store in this
community and in 1947 he and 'his wife
Janet, and young childten Beverley and
Fraser, established their residence here and
opened the children's wear store in the east
portion of the Johnstone Block, now
Whetstone Furniture.
Janet Ashton managed the store while
Lloyd continued his saleson the road for a
period of time. As the business flourished,
Lloyd made it his full -tine occupation and
together with his wife, opt*ated in that loca-
tion for three years.
With expansion in mindtand to secure ad-
ditional space, they purchased the Dry
goods store of Emma M Cluskey on the
south side of the .main steet in 1952. For
many years Miss McCluskty's business• had
been known as Templetons.
Mr. and Mrs. Ashton: expanded the
children's wear, and assumed the dry
goods, millinery and ladies' wear in the new
location. In later years the business was ex-
panded to include a basement department
and later a men's wear was opened in the
adjacent store to the west.
The business grew to be one of the most
prominent clothing stores in this part of the
country.
Janet Ashton died in September of 1970 at
the age of 53. She had been his full time
associate in the business all through those
years.
Over the years, Lloyd was active in com-
munity events. t- Ie was a member of
Lucknow United, Church and served in
several church offices, a charter member
and past :President of the Lucknow and
District Lions Club, a member of Old Light
Masonic Lodge, a supporter of minor sports
and a coach of minor softball, a past presi-
dent of the Lucknow Business Association
and a constant promoter of the business ac-
tivities of the village.
In January 1972, Lloyd was married to the
former Eileen (Johnstone) Lavis who had
been an employee of the Ashton store for 19
years. They continued to operate the
business until it was sold to Syke and Jim
Sutherland in 1973.
Lloyd and Eileen have spent the winters in
Florida in recent years and his health had
caused him to be hospitalized for three
weeks from March 12 until April 4 in
Hollywood, Florida.
Mr. Ashton had been affected by
Alzheimer's Disease in recent years.
• Besides his wife Eileen, he is survived by
one daughter Beverley and her husband
Donald Thompson of Lucknow, and one son
Dr. Fraser Ashton and his wife Catherine of
Aylmer, Quebec; also five grandchildren,
Susan Thompson of Kitchener, Nancy
Thompson of London, Donalda Thompson of
Lucknow, Antoine and Stefanie Ashton of
Aylmer, Quebec.
Lucknow on Friday, May 9 at 2 p.m. con-
ducted by Rev. Warren McDougall of
Lucknow United Church. Burial was in
Greenhill Cemetery, Lucknow.
Pallbearers were Charles, Webster,
Leonard MacDonald, Donald MacKinnon,
Bud • Thompson, Lorne Phillips, all of
• Lucknow and Wayne Ruttan of Priceyille.
Flowerbearers were Jack Ferguson of
Listowel, Anson Ruttan of Fordwich, Cliff
Pyke of Gorrie, Paul Finlay of Lucknow,
Antoine Ashton of Aylmer, Quebec.
