All classes were integrated and special ac- tivities planned to allow the children better learning experiences'. (Photo by Mike Ferguson) Students go "hog wild" BY PAUL HARTMAN Here's a tail with a twist. Though national Pig Day in the U.S. is of- ficially March 1, Victoria Public School students celebrated the momentous date some two rrlonths later. Tuesday, May 6, was Pig Day at Victoria and the School's 400 student marked the event with activities ranging from painting to puppet shows to cooking, In all, there were 24 different activities, each relating in some way to that common barnyard animal, the pig. Groups of approx- imately 15 students each, took part in three of the sessions. Response seemed quite positive to the event: Students and staff enjoyed telling pig jokes, learning sign language related to pigs, singing pig songs and the like. But as teacher and co-ordinater of the oc- casion, Doug Yeo explained, Pig Day was not just for fun. Mr. Yeo noted that the day was designed to provide students with exposure to various classrooms, teachers and other students. As well, students were provided with the oppor- tunity to interact with students of other age levels and to assist them in a learning environment. Perhaps most importantly, the day gave students the chance to think more creatively. Mr. Yeo remarked that this was the first time that all the students of Victoria were involved in the same learning program while being spread throuh-out the school. A final purpose of Pig Day may have been overlooked in' all the excitement:. it gave students the opportunity to learn about and understand an often misunderstood animal, the pig. ?ou might say it gave them the chance to see through all the hog -wash.
