Pretty well everyone was there," says Dr. Neal. Though the demonstration showed the wide support by doctors of the Ontario Medical Association's dissatisfaction over Bill 94, Neal says it was a "weird demonstration." "It was a large assembly and almost all the doctors looked uncomfortable in the role -of carrying. placards, It's not something"doctors are involved in usually. They're not experienced protesters." Dr. Neal says the large number of knowledgeable and eminent -appearing specialists in the crowd were not the "radical -looking" sort of people one would expect at a protest. "There were all sorts of grey-haired and bearded academics and leaders of exper- tise in their fields," he says. Though it was the largest demonstration held yet to protest the Liberal government, the crowd was well-behaved using "polite applause." "There was a festive spirit at the demonstration. It was a nice opportunity to see old friends," he says. Dr. Neal says he was disappointed that Premier David Peterson and Health Minister Murray Elston did not "have the courtesy and politeness to speak." ."Afterall, itwasn't a meat -eating crowd of fanatics at the demonstration," he says. Dr. Neal says the demonstration showed the public that the legislation to ban extra - billing is universally opposed by doctors. He says he doesn't know what the next step of the doctors will be adding that "striking will be a personal decision." "I think a fair compromise has been pro- posed by the doctors and it's pretty much in the government's ballpark. It will de- pend on the government's reaction and their willingness to talk," he says.
