of his quiet and shy personality.
"Straight I couldn't stand.. the limelight
but after five beers I was at the bar telling
jukes louder than ariyuiic iii tine N18cc," h
says.
Bill says his friends told him he'd be
such a nice guy if he'd just cut down on his
drinking but he didn't want to. He didn't
drink for the taste but for the effect the
alcohol produced. And, then he reached a
point where he lost the choice to stop.
"Becoming an alcoholic is like making
pickles. After a certain time in the brine,
the cucumbers become pickles and there's
no turning back. There's no chance those
pickles will ever become cucumbers
again," he says.
Though the alcohol was causing ulcers
and his personal life was in shambles, Bill
couldn't help but drink every day for the
last year and a half before he joined A.A.
Every morning he would start the day
• with three ounces of vodka. When he threw
back the vodka, he would shudder uncon-
trollably for 30 seconds until the alcohol
started to take effect.
"Once I, had that shot, I had the mental
feeling that everything was going to be
okay. It's pretty crazy when I think of it
now," he says.
Now, Bill says he realizes that the
alcohol was a symptom of underlying pro-
blems, though at the time it gave the illu-
sion of freeing him from the problems.
"I started to drink in my teens, the time
of greatest upheaval in anyone's' life. I also
, grew up during an era when relationships
weren't explained."
"Society is obsessed with drinking. We
need more public information about the
possible outcome about alcohol abuse and
about the importance of moderation."
"We tell guys at 20 that if they come to
A.A. now, they won't have • to face jail,
broken homes and broken marriages. But,
most of the time they say they'll let it get a
little worse, first," he says..

Dungannn church
celebrates anniversary
There was full church when Dungannon
United celebrated its 131st anniversary.
Rev. Glenn Wright from White Oaks
United Church, London and . a former
Dungannon minister were guest speakers.
Special music from the choir and the "Free
Spirits" a , youth group from Riverside
Church, London added greatly to the
service.
Rev. Wright also dedicated two brass
flower containers donated by the Thompson
family in memory of the late Frank Thomp-
son, which is greatly appreciated.
Donnybrook, Nile and Trinity withdrew
their services and joined the church for the
day.
