The social and economic direction provid- ed by the Liberal government is the basis with which Ontario can and will secure a leading position in an increasingly com- petitive world. However, as Peterson stated: "Technology is only worth something if it is applied and it can only be applied by people. Therein, it seems to me lies the genius of the government direction, to knit together education, technologies and traditional industries towards new horizons." Together, we can build Ontario into a .world-class leader. r nR1CHILL WATER Y vRnS Subsequent to the October, 1985 budget, and Inter -ministerial committee from Treasury, Municipal Affairs, and Environ- ment was formed to revi,w the financial position of Ontario munictpalities facing unrealistic obligations on water treatment and waste control facilities. I am please to announce notice received from the Minis • of the Environment, Jim Bradley, that the. Parkhill Water Works System will receive assistance in the form of a debt write-off, in the amount of $185,694. The Ministry of the Environment has also announced grants for water works projects to the Township of Tuckersmith for $42,000 and to the Township of Stephen for $53,000. Minister of Citizenship and Culture Lily Munro has approved a grant to the Van Eg- mond Foundation for improvements to Van Egmond House, in the amount of $22,005. Transportation and Communications Minister Ed Fulton would like to remind On- tario motorists to keep -then. licence plates when they sell or scrap their vehicles. Owners areor►lil le= -tai= * bearing their licence plates. If your vehicle is sold, re -possessed, or wrecked, you should make sure you remove the plates to avoid getting any undue tickets. ONTARIO: A World Class Leader .In its first Throne Speech, the Liberal government of Premier David Peterson outlined the major challenges facing On- tario over the next decade. Peterson is committed to building Ontario into, a world class society by ensuring this province has the necessary skills and exper- tise to adapt to an increasingly competitive world economy. Ontario must act now to meet the challenges the future holds. The Liberal government will ensure that Ontario can rise to the challenges associated with an advanced industrial society by harnessing new technologies and inforthatinn, A''$1 billion fund will be chaired by the premier.She money will be directed towards stimulating research and develop ment as well as to promote the 'en- trepreneurial spirit in Ontario. Also, the government will work tp strengthen the service and primary. in- dustries. To the service sector, the govern- ment will expand the Smalls Busine Development Corporation to include the se vice sector as well as introduce regulations in the securities industry to strengthen their competitive edge. Moreover, the„ agriculturalsector will receive additional support for financing and marketing pro- grams along with ''the commitment to enhance programs .geared towards protec- ting and increasing the productivity of soils. In conjunction with the strengthening of our domestic economic base the govern- ment will aggressively pursue increasing our trade links with Pacific Rim Nations. A trade office will be established in Seoul and a Centre for Science Technology and Culture will beset up in China. Greater emphasis' will be placed on the quality and relevance of our entire educa- tional system. The system will receive ap- propriate funding to equal the challenge before us. Ontario can be a world class leader with business and educatibn working QUEEN'S PARK together. The government will assist students in developing entrepreneurial and self - motivating skills; enrich our work force with skills training; and will strengthen training opportunities for women, the han- dicapped, minorities, older workers; and those living in remote communities. Also, the government will work to ensure a preeminent system of health care which is both affordable and accessible. To this end, the premier will initiate a comprehensive study into the future direction of health care in this province. This study will examine such issues as the changing demographic make-up of Ontario; manpower and technology; and the role of preventative medicine. In the short-term, the people of Ontario can expect: increased funding for cancer treatment and care; a new strategy for the ' capital funding of our hospitals; and an em- phasis on geriatric care units in selected local hospitals. The Liberal government under the leader- ship of Peterson, has provided direction for the next decade. The government will work to build' an outstanding system in technology, education and health care. Moreover, the government will build a world class society while continuing the pro- cess of fair, open and compassionate government. Legislative reform will give members a greater chance to participate and offer their unique, talents. As well, reforms to the budget process and election expenses act will be forthcoming.
