The result was something new to warfare: a vast, consuming inferno, a fire storm. Ris- ing currents of air caused hurricane -force winds to feed the fire from all sides, sucking people into the flames. The heat was in- tense. Air raid shelters became ovens, bak- ing and shriveling those huddled within. Other people were bogged down in molten asphalt. Over 40,000 perished, more than 20 times the number killed in an ordinary bom- bing raid. . Two years ,cater, on the other side of the globe, another fire storm consumed Hiroshima, Japan. This time the conflagra- - lion was lit by a single plane that dropped "only one bomb. The bomb, an atom bomb, was dubbed Little Boy. But its effect was anything but little. It was horrendous. It blinded with brilliant light. It killed and maimed by fire and heat and blast wave. It poisoned by deadly radiation. Three days later, another bomb, named Fat Man, obliterated half of Nagasaki. A ridge that runs through the centre of that hilly city protected the other half. Today, there are about 50,000 of these weapons of mass destruction in existence. Consider : If the two super powers (America - Russia) used a mere five per cent of their strategic nuclear weapons against each other's cities within minutes 200 million peo- ple would die, four times the number slain in World War II. The huge number of wounded survivors would expect little or no care from overburdened medical centres. Just one U.S. Trident submarine is equip- ped with enough nuclear missiles to blast 192 separate targets. Each of these explo- sions would be eight times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. Right now, there are 36 strategic missile submarines in the U.S. fleet, carrying 616 missiles bearing more than 4,928 warheads. The Soviet`Union has a comparable fleet. The world stockpile of nuclear weapons has 2,600 times more explosive power than the combined munitions of World War II. Such statistics are mind-boggling, and they underscore the magnitude off the pro- blem. The consequences of a nuclear war would not affect merely the combatants. In a recent essay in the magazine Eoreign Af- fairs, scientist Carl Sagan said that a nuclear war "would imperil every survivor on the earth. There is a real danger of ex- tinction of humanity." However, those who accept the Bible as the Word Qf Almighty God, "whose name alone. is Jehovah" (Psalm 83:18), can despite the fact that "men's hearts" may be "failing them for fear, and for looking after those things coming on the earth." (Luke 21:26), be assured that "the meek (that is: those willing to be taught) will inherit the earth, delight themselves in the abundance of peace, and dwell therein forever." (-Psalm 37:11,18) Jesus confirmed this in his sermon on the mount. (Matthew 5:5) See also Isaiah 2:2-4. Guide leaders need help for parents to keep Guiding doing in town Dear Editor, Last Saturday, May 3, all Guiding Units of Goderich and Kingsbridge were supposed to participate in Camp. Klahanie Clean -Up. An ad was inserted into the Community Calendar of the ,Goderich Signal -Star and parents approached through newsletters and by word of mouth from their children. Most Guide Leaders and a handful bf kids showed up along with one or two of our parents. It was an extremely disappointing turn - :out. The first camp into Klahanie this year will be on May 24-25, which is two Brownie Units. Only one parent from these units turned out to help us get ready for the camp- ing season. Most Guide leaders, as well as raising families. have full time jobs outside the home. A lot of people are under the impres- sion that they receive a monetary pay for their efforts in their units. It is a volunteer position, and therefore any help from parents be it at Camp clean- up, at Camp or helping out once in a while at the weeklypeetings are most appreciated. We gladly give up some of our weekends with our families to go on special outings because we enjoy working with youth. Already we are . having •to say NO to children who want to join Guide' and Sincerely C.F. Barney Brownie Units in Goderich in the September season. The main reason is lack of help. Most units are already full -up. If you have a daughter in Brownies, Guides; etc. in- Goderich- or surrounding. areas, please contact her unit guider and of- fer your help. Twice a year from 'every parent would certainly be appreciated. We hope this letter will stir some hearts and maybe consciences for forthcoming help next year if not for the remainder of this year. Who knows! Maybe soon there will be no Guiding in Goderich!! Yours Sincerely, Brownie and Guide Leaders Camp Klahanie Clean -Up.
