Sr. Vikings look impressive in two victories
The GDCI Senior Vikings began their
1986 Huron Perth Conference high school
soccer season in an impressive fashion last
week with victories over the Exeter South
Hurdn Panthers and the St, Mary's
Salukis.
Wednesday, in Exeter, the Vikings
defeated last years' Huron Perth cham-
pions, 3-1. Friday, at home the Vikings
shutout the Salukis, the team which
eliminated them in the playoffs last
season, 4-0.
The play of the Vikings in these games
• dicated that coach Dick Madge's team
has a realistic chance of winning the
Huron Perth title this season. The Vikings
have a strong offence, talented mid -
fielders, solid fullbacks .and excellent
goaltending.
The Vikings played in rain, snow and
gale force winds Wednesday in Exeter.
Playing against the wind in the first half,
the Vikings gave up one goal. The Pan-
thers' Chanomone scored vyhen his shot
slipped through the hands of Viking keeper
Kevin Telford.
With the wind at their backs in the se-
cond half, the Vikings kept continual
pressure on Exeter and scored three goals.
Todd Graham got two of the goals. The
first came when he kicked in a rebound.
which came to him off the crossbar after a
scramble in front of the Exeter goal.
Graham's second goal saw him outrace
the Panther defenders to a through ball.
Juergen Schulz, the Vikings talented cen-
tre half, scored the other Viking goal when
the Exeter keeper punched a corner kick
out in front of his net and Schulz sent it
past him along the ground. Ian MacKinnon
had a strong game at fullback for the
Vikings.
Against St. Mary's, the Vikings put a lot
of pressure on the Salukis in their end and
-forced the St. Mary's fullbacks into fouls
which resulted in two penalty kick goals by
Todd Graham. Graham had another goal
to give him a total of five in just two
games. John Graham (no relation) scored
the other Goderich goal on a good shot to
the corner following a long run.
Kevin Telford had the shutout in the Vik-
ing goal and was steady throughout the
game. Pat Frayne, the bionic -footed
fullback of the Vikings also had a strong
defensive game.
The Vikings have road games this week
in Seaforth and Mitchell.

Bowlers help
Big Brothers
The Big and Little Brothers of the North
Huron Association have benefitted.a great
deal from the past two Bowl -for -Millions
Bowleramas, Cathy Boddy of theassocia-
tion said.
Many people participated in the event
the past two years and helped the associa-
tion by soliciting pledges. Larry Million
topped the pledge -getters this year and
Simon Langlois raised the most money in
1985 with an honorable mention going to
Marj Moore.
The- local Bowler's Association, with
Moore, Art'Burt and Harry and Steve Lit-
tle of Little Bowl, have helped the associa-
tion's event. •
Victoria Public School students had the
highest team pledge in 1986 with little
brother, Carl Beier, bowling for them. In
1985, the doctors of 'Goderich had the
highest team pledge, with Dr. Mario
Cauchi heading the team. Both team and
individual avo'atds'are inpfay at Little

President Boddy said the assueiatiuu is
indebted to the Big Brothers who offer
their time and to the merchants who
donated prizes for their bowling events.

ODE TO LAWN BOWLING
BY BEA ABERHART
The twenty-fourth of May, you say
Lawn bowlers must get out to play!
Picture with me this wondrous sight,
Of friends and colleagues all dresed in
white, '
Eager to start and play the game,
Hoping to gain a little fame. .
Your bowl is delivered across the green,
You hope it's the best they've ever seen,
The game continues up and down,
While the skips take turns to wear a frown,
A stop for tea and jokery chat,
Before we return to place the mat.
The battle progresses on and on, -
Yet you wonder where time has gone,
The final end and the game is won,
But you still reflect on what you've done.
A game enjoyed by young and old,
With many a story to be told.
Each green a little oasis made,
Where daily troubles begin to fade,
A short respite, a relaxing test,
Surely this game of bowls is best.
