council d
bates its loanin
After a lengthy debate, Goderich council
agreed at its Apr. 21 meeting `to lend
display boards to Exeter high school prin-
cipal Brucg Shaw for a county -wide art ex-
hibit in Clinton.
Though several councillors quoted the
town policy that states no property of the
town is lent out of town, Coun. Stan Profit
said he sees no harm in lending the display
boards.
"What's the problem with loaning
something to someone? We have a special
request from Bruce Shaw, our municipal
neighbor," he said.
Profit added that the display boards
would be lent out on the condition that
they're returned in the same condition.
Coun. Glen Carey said he couldn't
believe such a request would be made of
the town.
"Can't the board of education buy their
own display boards? Itmay seem petty but
presumably the Huron board of education
can find display boards to buy. There is
such a thing called self-sufficiency," he
said.
In Shaw's letter, he explains that
policy
organizers have searched everywhere for
display boards but can only find them in
Goderich.
"I understand you do not loan them, as a
rule, but under the , circumstances, and
since this is a county -wide educational ex-
hibit, I have been asked to make this per-
sonal request to you," said Shaw.
Council turned down another request to
borrow town picnic tables for the Port
Albert 150th Birthday Celebration in June
and August since the tables would be used
by the town for its long weekend
celebration.
Airport safety is jeopardized by tower

He said pilots depend on an altimeter
which indicates their altitude but this in-
strument can be out as much as 50 to 100
feet due to weather conditions.
Wright also explained the tower could in-
terfere with departures at the airport
because if a mechanical failure were to
result in an aborted takeoff attempt, the
standard procedure is for the pilot to land
straight ahead because he does not have
the altitude to circle and come back and

Children's Services for 75 years.
"What a wonderful commu'lity. If you're
going to have a live, vibrant Children's
Aid, it's going to cost you. If you don't give,
it will be dead," he said.

ment to the organization's by-laws to ex-
pand the board from 11 to 15 members.

Eight to 10 people from both Goderich and
Clinton are welcome to participate.
Since it's the first course of its kind in
Goderich, organizers hope to run it twice a
year from now on, says Guse.
"Heart patients need something like this
to show them the room home," she says.
"The course will tell me and my wife
what we can expect in our daily lives. It
will also tell me how to control my stress
and give me a better understanding of the
'medicine I'm taking," says Tugwell.
"And, by understanding what other peo-
ple have been through, I hope to help so-
meone the way I was helped," he says.
land.
With a twin engine plane, the rate of
climb is cut considerably and weather can
also reduce the plane's ability to climb
causing concern for the location of the
tower, said Wright.
Wright told the hearing the height of the
tower would be shown on a chart and in the
remarks section of a booklet, Canada Air
Pilot which is consulted by pilots because
it describes the conditions at airports in
Canada. Wright said the booklet does not
necessarily describe obstructions.
He said if the tower is to be built in the
proposed location, it would have to be
marked with red obstruction lights or high
reflection paint. Some form of visual
assistance to pilots would be necessary
apart from what is available on maps, said
Wright. Cables would also have to be
marked.
Wright told the board the proposed
transmission route is unacceptable to the
airport, the airport committee and the
town of Goderich. An alternative route just
east of the proposed route is better but still
unsatisfactory, he said.
An early alternate route through
Carlow, suggested by Ontario Hydro but
never proposed or evaluated as an alter-
native, would be acceptable, Wright add-
ed. There is just a little more clearance
between the proposed route and the alter-
nate route, saicl,.Wright and it would not be
satisfactory.
The Goderich airport committee will
continue its presentation at the hearings in
Clinton on Tuesday, May 6 at 11 a.m.
