F','stival Gallery will
feature work of ginner
The Blyth Festival Gallery is pleased to
announce that the work of TOM BENNER
will be shown in the Gallery of Blyth
Memorial Hall from May 1 through to June
1, 1986. The exhibition will include a variety
of Benner's work including "Owls in My
Sleep", "Great Auk", and "White Pine". In
addition to this exhibition, Benner will be
present on Saturday May 31 and Sunday
June 1, during the Blyth Festival's Annual
Used Book Sale, to give a special slide show
followed by a discussion of his work.
Benner is a London, Ontario, artist who
has won national recognition with a number
of his works, including his "Third World
Parity Kit", a collection of paintings and
sculptures done in the mid -1970's. He has ex-
hibited across the country and his works are
incluaeu ,,, L„e Uanada Council Art Bank
and the°Art Gallery of Ontario collection.
Most recently, he has been working on
pieces depicting different animals, birds
and nature symbols used )?3, older civiliza-
tions, mainly those of Nort4Arnerica. These
pieces portray the harm that modern man is
inflicting on species such as the fin whale,
polar bear, great auk, sea eagle, and puma.
His work convey's a sense of loss for these
animals, and man's lack of understanding of
his environment in general.
The exhi ion is sponsored by the Art
Gallery of $ ntario through the Artist and

joins Orchestra
On Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10
the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble
joins Orchestra London Canada at the
Grand Theatre for an evening of musical
highlights from the Stages of Opera and
Broadway.
Four of the Company's top soloists will
present favourites from operas such as
Carmen and The Barber of Seville and the
great musicals from Cole Porter to Rogers
and Hammerstein including The King and I
London Canada
as concert engagements across the country,
an annual concert -lecture series and in-
novative and entertaining community
residences.
Joining Orchestra London from the Cana-
dian Opera Company Ensemble are conduc
for Derek Bate, who is the music advisor to
the COC and conductor of the COC Or-
chestra. Singers are Susan Tsagkaris,
soprano who is in her second year with the
COC Ensemble and recently appeared in
and Kiss Me Kate. Cosi Fan Tutte with the COC at the 0 Keefe;
The Canadian Opera Company Ensemble, Kimberly Barber, mezzo-soprano who made
Canada's only year round operatic troupe, her debut with the COC this fall as Kate
was founded in July 1980 through a generous �Pinkertoht,ine Madame

year, between nine and twelve talented
young singers are given an opportunity to
serve a one-year apprenticeship with the
COC, polishing their craft through a com-
prehensive program of performance and ad-
vanced training. COCE members appear in
COC mainstage productions and are the
featured performers at the annual Summer
Festival at Harbourfront. They also par-
ticipate in such a wide variety of programs
soloist with the Kitchener -Waterloo Sym-
phony, Canadian Chamber Ensemble and
London Pro Musica; and Patrick Timney,
baritone who has appeared with the COC in
Madame Butterfly, The Beggar's Opera and
La Traviatta.

Cubs and Scouts to plant
Trees for Canada here May 3
Fifty Cubs and Scouts from 4th Goderich
Group at North Street Church will plant 800
young trees in the town of Goderich on May
3 as Scouting's contribution towards im-
proving the ecology in the community and to
raise funds to support scouting activities.
Tho boys will collect pledges for each tree

They will be joining other boys in the
scouting movement throughout Canada in
this Trees for Canada .project which has
been going on for over 20 years. In 1985, over
80% of Scout Districts in Ontario par-
ticipated in Trees for Canada.
