Religion
It's quite ,a strain to reconcile
the tragedy and the relief of Easter
BY THE REVEREND
ROBERT J.CROCKER
ST. GEORGE'S
ANGLICAN CHURCH
If you were to ask me, I think Iwould have
to admit that just about the most difficult
thing I have ever had to do as a clergyman,
was to take a• funeral and a wedding on the
same afternoon. But I think that the op-
posite, a wedding and then a funeral, wguld
be even worse.
The problem is not in being unaccustomed
to taking weddings and funerals. The pro-
blem is in the mental and emotional contor-
tions involved. One is just about the opposite
of the other.
No, I don't believe in being absurdly sad
at burial services, or absurdly happy at
weddings. Some of you might even want to
reverse the words and apply happy to
funerals and sad to weddings - if you were
feeling that way. That's not the problem.
The difficulty is the sudden shift in one's
patterns of thinking. I guess it's as much a
mental strain, as anything else.
Good Friday, followed by Easter, is just
such a strain. You can read about it and feel
if reflected in the lives of the people of the
tiospels1 who were involved in it.
The tragedy is too real - or is it the relief
on Easter that's tog. real? Anyhow, it's
almost impossible to take the two evq/tits
together, both seriously, and both sensil)ly,
at the same time. 4
Yet they are opposites that go together.
•
There had to be a death in order that there
could b a Resurrection. Jesus had to die to
show u LIFE. And the reality of BOTH
together - both life and death - is the impor-
tant truth.
I've admitted: it's quite a sfi ain on the
mind.
UCW takes a tour of EIuewaer Centre
Unit one of Victoria Street United Church
Women, The Harmony Circle, held their
March meeting at Bluewater Centre.
After being met by Chaplain Geddes, and
spoken to briefly by Superintendent
DeGrandis, the 23 members and two.visitors
present were divided into four groups. Each
group was taken, by a resident, on an
enlightening tour of the institution..
Later, over coffee and cookies provided
by the centre, DeGrandis told something of
what the administration are trying to
achieve; and Rev. Geddes explained how
church people aright be able to help.
Elaine Bamford led the devotional part of
the regular meeting which was continued in
the visitors' room. Scripture, of the crucifix-
ion and death of Christ, was read by Irene
Freeman.
Violet Lamb gave a reading for Good Fri-
day, which emphasized that this was the
supreme example. of self -giving. Such love
demands my soul, my life, my time, talent
and treasure. Elaine led in prayer, and all
joined in the Lord's Prayer.
In the period devoted to stewardship, Ver-
' na Robertson reminded that as stewards of
the evangel, we ought to teach, visit, help,
zinc! promote justice whenever we have op-
portunity. 'Then Verna led in a stewardship
prayer.
It was decided tdo interchange the April
and May meetings, regarding finch and
time.
After the business, had been dealt with,
leader Pearl Fowler closed the meeting with
a poem, "A New beginning", and an Irish
Benediction.
Final feature of the afternoon was an
entertaining parade of Easter bonnets. Joy
Harrisorjs's hat was judged most original,
and Violet Lamb's the prettiest.
