Maitla!ld Valley Anglers
active in stocking rivers.
BY GERRARD SARTORI
The start of the fishing season is once
again spurring the adrenalin in the hearts
of local fisherman. ..
The long-awaited ice break-up can be
seen on the Maitland River and soon the
water will subside to a level where en-
thusiasts will break out carefully stored
gear and headfor the open Waters.
It's this time of year when Goderich
residents most appreciate the natural
resource that the town is blessed with.
The lake, the river and the small streams
and ponds that are productively fished
each year to provide leisure and sport for
the nylon harvestor.
We are undoubtedly envied by some of
our neighbouring communities for having
such a valuable leisure resource on our
• doorstep.
Although everyone is not a fisherperson,
more and more people every year are tak-
ing to this ever growing sport. - It's a
relatively inexpensive activity to become
involved in and the tangible rewards may
be viewed in ones' frying pan after a suc-
cessful outing.
I am writing on behalf of the local fishing
club The Maitland Valley Anglers. The
club is open to anyone who cares to, .join
with others to promote the enhancement of
our local waterways for fishing and
recreation.
We have a wonderful resource at hand
and there are some of us who think we ct
become one of the most productive fishing
areas in Ontario.
Our efforts in the past four years, are
starting to show visible results in creel
census taken at the Maitland. This year
we are going to push harder than ever in
Rainbow trout stocking.
Last year we raised over 60,000 fish from
eggs fertilized, incubated and hatched and
introduced in the Maitland and this year
we are estimating stocking at 140,000: Our
short term stocking will aLso realize 10,000
yearling .Rainbows stocked in the river
with our club footing the $4,000, bill.
If, you find one of the 4-6 inch Rainbow on
your hook this spring please release it
unharmed so it may return a couple years
from now ready for a riverside fish -fry.
Please join us in our efforts to return
Maitland River trout stocks to the abun-
dance they were found when the first local
settlers sat on the banks sporting bamboo
poles:
Our third annual fishing derby will be held
April 26' & 27. Anyone wishing to join may
write to Maitland Valley Anglers P.O. box
