The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-03-26, Page 314b Tweens win ringette c' M1; am»siOflS ip Girls cap undefeated season with championshi win over Exeter Ministry holds meetings over proposed fees The Goderich Tween Ringette team cap- ped a remarkable season Saturday by win- ning the Huron -Perth League champion- ship over Exeter. The victory put the finishing touches on a phenomenal season for the young girls who went through league andexhibition games undefeated and they often won by lopsided scores. The only 'blot on their season record was a forfeit to Mitchell earlier in the year. The best -of -three final series against Ex- eter was the toughest test for the Tweens and although they did not lose a game in the final round, Exeter was a formidable opponent. Goderich won the first game of the series 7-6 and the teams tied 6-6 in the second game here''last Monday. • Goderich won game 3 in Exeter Friday 7-4 and then clinched the league champion- ship with an 8-5 victory in Goderich Satur- day night. Goderich broke open a 2-2 late in the first period Saturday with a pair of goals in the last two minutes't° carry a 4-2 lead into the final period. The home team then took to the offence and built up a 8-3 lead with under four minutes left in regulation time. Exeter fought back with two goals in the dying minutes but the Gpderich Tweens held off the comeback and won the game, and the Huron -Perth championship, 8-5. Alesha Glousher led the Goderich of- fence scoring three goals while teammate Stacey Clarence chipped in with two goals. Jennifer Hamilton, Angie Harrison and Rebecca Harrison scored one goal each for Goderich. Trisha Rumig led in the assist department setting up three goals while Hamilton, Leslie Brereton, Tara Haylow and Denise Johnston had two apiece in the final game. The victory gave Goderich a record of three wins and one tie in the best -of -five final series. The tie game occured in Goderich in Game 2 and no overtime was played to determine a winner. In that game, Goderich scored with less than two minutes.left in the game and held off a last minute flurry by Exeter to earn the 6-6 tie. Goderich .clearly outshot Exeter in the game but.the forwards either missed the net or hit the Exeter goaltender. The teams were tied 2-2 after the first period of play but Exeter capitalized on its chances and led 6-4 .withunder Jennifer minutes left in the game. Hamilton scored 10 seconds after Exeter's sixth goal to pull Goderich within one and " then Jackie Crawford scored with a minute and a half left to tie the game. , Exeter had several opportunities to win the game in the final minute but Goderich held off the rally and settled for a tie. Goderich won the third game • of the series in Exeter Friday, 7-4, as Angie Har- rison scored three goals. Rumig, Crawford, Beckfy Harrison and Clarence .each scored one goal in the win. SPORTS SHORTS The introduction of a resident angling licence could provide between $8 million and $12 million annually in additional funds for', fisheries management in On- tario. This additional money wl ofd be the available if a licencing p ops ministry is implemented. The proposal tentatively suggests an angling licence fee of $10.00 for Ontario residents between 18 and 64 years of age and a $5.00 fee for residents 65 years of age or over. A series of public meetings have been scheduled throughout the province to hear what Ontario;s residents have to say. Meetings in southwestern Ontario include: April 7, Holiday Inn, 480 Riverside West in Windsor; April 9 & J0, Ramada Inn, $17• Exeter Road, London; April 15, Owen Sound Public Library, 824 First Avenue West, Owen Sound All meetings are from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Resident sport fishing licence ques- tionnaires and further information are available at the Wingham District Office. Novice Bs split t Vv o league games The Goderich Novice (blue team) split a pair of games in Tier II action on the weekend defeationg Zurich Friday and los- ing to Huron Park Saturday. In the game Friday, Goderich spotted, Zurich a one -goal lead after one period but scored three straight goals in the second period .. d and added two in third to record a 5- 2 victory. Zurich led 1-1 after one, but a three -goal outburst in the second period boosted Goderich into a 3-2 lead after two periods. Goderich scored the only two goals of the final period to clinch the win. Steve Linklater. and Steve Clarence the Goderich attack with two goals apiece. Clarence scored the first Goderich goal and capped the win with the fifth goal. Linklater scored one in the second and third period. Brandon Corriveau scored ,the other goal on an unassisted effort. Things were different Saturday as Huron Park built up a 5-0 lead in the first period and coasted to a 7-3 win over Goderich. Linklater. and Corriveau scored for Goderich in the second • period with each player setting up the other and John MacDonald scored the final Goderich goal in the third period with Ryan Million assisting. rig Novice team loses two league games The Goderich Novice Bs ( orange team had a tough weekend losing two games in Huron -Perth Tier II action. Goderich dropped a 4-0 decision to Hen- sall here Saturday afternoon and Sunday there were edged 3-2 by Bayfield in a game played in Zurich. In the game here Saturday, Hensall jumped in front 2-0 after one period of play and added single goals in the second and third periods to clinch the 4-0 win. Blair Moir. led Hensall with a two -goal perfor- mance. In the game Sunday, Hayfield's Marc Webster scored three goals and it was all Bayfield needed as they went on to win the game 3-2. Webster scored his first goal midway through the first period as Bayfield led 1-0 and he blew the game open in the second period with two goals in a span of 24 seconds. Trailing 3-1 Goderich got a goal from Darryl Fielder. to narrow the gap to a single goal but neither team was. able to score in the final, period and the game end- ed 3-2. Mark Jhnston scored the first Goderich goal with Darnell Connelly assisting. Johnston and Ben Armstrong assisted on the second goal. Club holds championship East End Gym members get fitness levels, tested Saturday A fitness testing clinic sponsored by the East End Gym for its members on Saturday was well attend- ed. The fitness appraisal involved .the Canadian Standardized Test for Fitness and the Yuhasz "'" Fitness Apprlisal from the University of Western Ontario. The testing covered four relatvelY dependent epmponentgincluding body weight and composition, flexibility, muscular strength and en- durance and Starr Jesney and right Ed Case being tested by Johfitness.
