Breede is,•presently making contacts with the school board to see where the new museum will fit, into the curriculum in order to structure the educational ex- ' perience more formally than in the past. Satellite museums will make the county more a part of the museum programming. Breede suggests exhibits could be placed in Exeter.and Wingham. The museum is at present placing an exhibit in the Blyth gallery at the Blyth Memorial Hall and through its closer association with the Van Egmond Foundation, there may be a satellite exhibit placed at the Van Egmond House. There is also the possibility of strengthening the. relationship with the Huron 'Historic Gaol which already uses some of the museum's artifacts in its display. Breede sees the Golden Triangle as a potential market for the Huron County Pioneer Museum and hopes to move into that market eventually. He anticipates between 30,000 and 35,000 visitors a year to the museum once the new inarket strategy is implemented. Breede has just returned from a major show in Detroit where he shared a booth with the Town of Goderich and the Blyth Summer Festival, so the museum is already making thrusts into new market places. The physical development of the museum will occur over a four year period with sequential opening of new areas and galleries. This development will ensure continued public interest in the museum. . allow for the integration of new exhibits ; and displays with the development, reduce the capital outlay on a year over year basis and allow fund raising to keep pace with the development. With a projected $2..8 million capital pro- ject, the Huron County Pioneer Musewn building project is the biggest rnuseun upgrading project in the province. The museum has received grants totalling $238,750 through the Canada Job Develop- ment Program and the National Museums of Canada, Musetith Assistance Program. The grant of $123,000 under the Canada Job Development- Program is being used to hire, support people to assist with the packing and storing of museum artifacts for the duration of the construction period; while the new buildings for the museum are being built. Six people have been hired and began working at the museum at the first of January. The Museum Assistance Prograrn grant of $115,750 will be used to,prepare the ar- chitectural 'drawings of the new museum buildings. The architect who assisted with the feasibility study, Christopher Borgal of Blyth was chosen as the architect to prepare sketches for the new museum at the March session of Huron Count' Coun- cd. The reconstruction of the museum became necessary when .in December 1980., a section of roof failed under snow loading. This was subsequently repaired irection and in 1982, B.M. Ross and Associates were c6lxunissioned to perform an engineering survey of the structural com- ponents of the main Wilding. This study found the bearing capacity of all of the se- condfloor structure of both the school and its additions was insufficient to carry loadings required by applicable codes. In addition, the roof areas were not capable of supporting loads as required by current codes. Roof leakage in the addi- tions to the school building were also noted. The result of this report was the closing of the museum during the winter seasons of 1982 - 1983 and the closing of I lie entire second floor display areas to the present. In 1982, consideration was also given to the relotatiol of the museum to the com- munity of Vanastra iii the outskirts of Clin- torh: The proposal would liave seen the museum located in an abandoned school building, once a part Of the former radar training station. The firm of"Museun Pru- granunes Collaborative recommended - against this relocation in a report prepared in November, 1982. • Turn to page 11 •. ,/ GUisCRICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 1986— PAGE 9 ROBERT McINTYRE registered O.H.A.A. hearing aid specialist will be holding a HEARING AID SERVICE CENTRE at 74 The Square, Goderich on Wed.
