Legion Midgets win
Wingham tourney
consolation title
The Goderich Legion Midgets ended
their 1985-86 season on a victorious note
last weekend by winning the Wingham
Tournament Consolation Championship
for . their division. The Midgets put
together a complete team effort and a little
bit of Garrow Magic to win the
tournament.
Bantam Scott Garrow sparked the
.Goderich team to the championship.. He
was named the MVP for the division as he
had eleven goals and six assists in the
three games.
In the three games Goderich outscored
their opponents 31-13 in one loss and two
wins:
Goderich drew Hanover for its first
game in which they lost 7-3. Goderich
scored first as Garrow netted his first five
minutes into the game after taking a pass
from Richard Boddy. But the Midgets fell
into their old habit of, taking too many
penalties as /Hanover scored five
powerplay goals. After Garrow's goal they
scored tw,e on the powerplay before Tom
Bean tied the game on a pass from Jim
Beattie. However, Hanover came back,
scoring three goals to end the second
period. Goderich mounted their comeback
when Garrow scored thirty-three seconds
into the period to make it 5-3. Mark Cauchi
received the assist. unfortunately
Goderich took a five-minute penalty late in
the game to end any hope of a comeback as
Hanover scored twice more to round out
the scoring.
In the second game Goderich was ready
to play as they literally. destroyed Kincar-
dine 16-3.
The team played a sttong, solid game in
which only eight penalties were assessed,
with Goderich only getting two. •
Goderich built up a five -goal lead before
Kincardine finally put one on the board.
Goderich scored again to end the first
period with a commanding 6-1 lead.
In the second period Goderich outscored
Kincardine 7-2 and shut Kincardine out in
the third 3-0.
The game saw crisp, sharp passing and -
picture perfect goals, most noticeably
from Garrow and one by Rod Nurse that
completely stunned the defencemen
Garrow led the attack with five goals
and four assists. Other scorers were: Dar-
rel Durnin 2, Cauchi 2, and singles to
Nurse, Beattie, Neil Rodger, Ryan Kelly,
Bean, Matt Wilkinson and Bruce Culbert.
• Assists were given to Durnin 2, Wilkinson
.2, and singles to Nurse, Beattie, Cauchi
Kelly, Gary Erb and MacKinnon.
On Saturday, the Midgets returned for
the final against Merriton. Again,
Goderich played excellent hockey in all
. areas as they won 12-3.
For the second game in a row the team

came out flying and ready to play hockey.
Their hard work paid off as the one-sided
score indicates when for the second con-
secutive game they reached double
figures.
Goderich scored three times in the first
and added two more in the second before
Merriton scored their 'first. The Midgets
responded by scoring two more to make it
7-1 at the end of the second period.
Goderich outscored Merriton 5-2 in the
final period to take home their only'cham-
pionship this year•
The scoring machine of Garrow again
led the new explosive offence with four
goals and two assists. Other goalscorers
were Bean 2, Cauchi 2, singles to Kelly,
Nurse, Rodger and Durnin. Erb led the tal-
ly in assists with three and others went to
Kelly 2, Beattie 2, and one each to Nurse,
• Cauchi, Brian Chambers, Dave Duncan,
and MacKinnon.
What is not shown by these lists of of-
fence is that superb play by the
goaltenders and defence. Gord Maclnnis
played the first and third. games and Jay
Williamson played the second. Both made
big saves when they were needed and
played excellent as they did all season.
The team wishes„to thank the coaches,
Kevih Austin, Bob Mommersteeg and Ron
Durnin for their time and work that they
gave. It was a fairly good season as the
team almost finished at the .500 mark.
Their final tally was 13 wins, 16 losses and
two ties. Next year the team will relative-
ly be the same and will be eager to bring
home more championships.

period and while Tiverton outscored

other. Randy Regier scored three for
Zurich.
