Depositors must accept
investment
some risk on
In a departure from traditional rivalries,
Brian O'Malley, President and Chief Ex-
ecutive of -Standard Trustco Ltd. today en-
dorsed the principle of co-insurance for
deposits that has been proposed by the
Canadian Battkeis' Association.
He told the company's annual general
meeting that co-insurance was necessary to
ensure large depositors accept some of the
risk and responsibility for the investment of
their funds.
O'Malley, however, proposed a different
method of implementing the principle than
that recommended •by the Bankers
Association.
"The .present level of insurance for the
first $60,000 of deposits must be maintain-
ed," he said. "The next $60,000 of deposits
should be co-insured on the basis Of 75 per
cent of the risk be accepted by the Canada
Deposit Insurance Corporation and 25 per
cent by the depositors."
O'Malley warned the government. of
dangerous consequences if full insurance on
the first $60,000 of deposits was reduced.
"Consumers will be coerced into dealing
almost exclusively with the very largest
financial institutions," he told shareholders
in the Ontario Room of L'Hotel in Toronto.
"The consequence would be inefficiencies
and high costs associated with reduced
competition."
O'Malley made these remarks in a sum-
mary of Standard Trust's record perfor-
mance during a year of upheaval in the
financial sector.
The' company's net income in 1985 rose to
$6,770,000 from $4,621,000 in 1984 and earn-
ings per share rose 52 per cent. Earnings in
1986 are forecast to grow by a further 10 per
cent to 20 per cent.
1986 will also rank as the eleventh Con-
secutive year that dividends were iricleas-
ed. Mr. O'Malley announced art increase in
the dividendto $0.45 a share payable on April
15 to shareholders of record on April 2.
