Garb and Gear Novices
play in London tourney
The Goderich Garb and Gear Novices
played outstanding hockey in a London
tournament on the weekend and narrowly
missed reaching the division final.
Eight teams participated in two divi-
sions• in a round-robin format. Goderich
played against London, Grimsby and
Flint, Michigan.
The novices defeated London 1-0 in its
first game, lost to Grimsby 4-2 and then
tied Flint 3-3. Goderich missed a berth in
the division final because of its goals for
and against percentage.
In its first game Thursday, Goderich got
an unassisted goal from Mike McBride
early in the first period and that was all it
took as the Garb and Gear Novices went on
to defeat London 1-0. Chris Lyndon picked
up the shutout in the London game.
In the second game Friday, Grimsby
broke open a 2-2 tie with two goals in the
third period "to defeat Goderich 4-2. The
teams were tied 1-1 after one period but
Grimsby scored the only goal of the second
period to carry a 2-1 lead into. the final
period.
Goderich tied the game in the third
period on David Lumley's goal with Craig
Corriveau assisting. Just 20 seconds later
Grimsby regained the lead and then
scored late in the period to clinch the win.
Jason Meriam, who scored the first goal of
the game on an unassisted effort, had the
other Goderich goal.
In its final game, Goderich got an
unassisted goal from Jason Meriam with
less than four minutes left to tie Flint 3-3.
The teams played through a scoreless
period and Goderich led 2-1 after two
periods. Derek Gilchrist and Trevor
Macaulay scored the Goderich goals.
In the final period, Flint scored two •
quick goals to take a 3-2 lead but Meriam's
goal at 11:11 tied things up.
