Goderich township has
first female councillor
BY ANNE NAREJKO
GODERICH TWP. - The municipal elec-
tions during the fall of 1985 made history for
this township and its residents. For the first
time in 150 years, a female won a seat on
council.
Carol Wammes, lifelong resident, won her
seat by acclamation and joined Case Brand,
John Rodges, Laurie Cox and Grant Stirling
. on township council.
It was due to some coaxing by a former
councillor that Mrs. Wammes decided to
take up politics.
"Jake Reder asked me if I would be in-
terested, so I sat on the rec board for two
years as program chairperson to see if 1 lik-
ed the political aspects," she explained.
In 1985, the late Gerry Ginn and his wife
Jean encouraged Mrs. Wammes further by
telling her they thought it was time a woman
sat on council. And ready to except a
challenge, Mrs. Wammes decided to try it.
The people and councillors of Goderich
Township have welcomed their first female
councillor warmly.
"I was surprised that I got in," she ex-
plained, "The people have been very sup-
portive...They give me a pat on the back and
the councillors are all behind me. The clerk,
Robin Thompson, has been excellent."
Mrs. Wammes not only has the support of
the public and council, her family is also
behind her "100,per cent."
The mother of two "went in (to politics)
with an open mind because. I didn't kno*
what to expect and my family has been
behind me all the way," she said:
Other than sitting on coiincil, the recrea-
tion committee and looking after her
children. LeeAnn; 11, Bradley, 9, and her
husband Neil, Mrs. Wammes finds time to
sit on the board of management for St.
James Middleton as well as working part-
time at Mary's in Clinton.
CAROL WAMMES
"I like to keep busy and keep mentally ac-
tive," Mrs. Wammes confessed.
Reeve Grant Stirling, who served as
Huron County's warden during 1983 and has
been reeve of Goderich Township for 12
years, says Mrs. Wammes is doing well.
"Any new councillor, whether they are
male or female, hasti .feel their way around
at the start, Carol is doing good, she's doing
very well," commented the reeve:
Cut county road budget
BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE
A $6.1 million road budget has been ten-
tatively approved by Huron County council.
On Mar. 6, county council acce¢ted the
budget which sees the county paying $2.24
million for its roads. This represents a 3.8
per cent increase from the $2.1 million taken
last year from county coffers.
However, the tentatively approved budget
is far from what county engineer Bob Demp-
sey originally proposed to the road commit-
tee. On Feb. 14, he presented a budget which
brought the county levy alone up 41 per cent.
This original proposal would see that one -
twentieth or 22.5 kilometres of the county
road system would get a hot mix resurfac-
ing. It was here that the road committee
made the biggest cut. A project to pave 10.7
kilometres of road on County Road 8 north of
. -Clinton was scrapped. This project alone
was estimated at $648,500.
Also: cit oth'the budget proposal was the
purchase of a $130,000 grader; the asphalt
resurfacing of the Auburn patrol yard
estimated at $46,000 and the $15,000 pur-
chase of a sign making machine.
The largest project this year is the
reconstruction of 9.6 kilometres of road on
County Road 15, from Highway 4 to County
Road 17. This is estimated to cost $790,000.
The second largest project to be under -
'taken by the county road department this
year is the hot mix resurfacing of 7.3
kilometres of County Road 31, from County
Road 13 to Highway 8. This project is
estimated at $770,000.
Another fairly extensive project
estimated at $725,500 is the hot mix paving
of 18.4 kilometres of road on County Road 22
from County Road 25 to Highway 86.
Other road construction and paving pro-
jects include $400,000 worth of hot.rnix pav-
ing of 9.3 kilometres on County Road 3 from
Highway 4 to the county road. Also, $294,000
- is earmarked for hot mix resurfacing of
County Road 1 from Highway 8 to County
Road 31, a distance of 4.4 kilometres.
Road construction and paving will cost a
total of $3.1 million this year.
The rest of the budget is for regular road
maintenance, winter control and equipment
maintenance, which is at f2.9 million for this
year.
The budget also includes the '$72,000
deficit carried over from 1985. This deficit
was caused by overspending in the area of
snow removal.
The Ministry of Tran_ sportation and Com-
munications will pay $3.9 million towards
the road budget.
All budgets for the county are subject to
final review by county council on Mar. 27.
