Stor delay sul s erich Lions
Goderich wins two dames. to advance to semifinal round Thursday
The 37th edition of the Goderich Lions
Club Young Canada Week Peewee Hockey
o Tournament may welrbe remembered for
the games that weren't played.
. The worst storm of the, winter of 1985-86
paralyzed Southwestern Ontario Friday
,.resulting in the cancellation of the opening
four games of the 58 -team tournament in-
cluding the Goderich-Acton game and the
opening ceremonies. It Marked the first
time in recent memory that weather forc-
ed the cancellation of games.
Play began Saturday morning and
tourncament chairman Bill Chisholm had
to accomplish some juggling to get the four
game§ in Sunday.
While, the schedule may have been rear-
ranged because of the storm, the results.
were rather gratifying for Goderich and its
Lion peewee hockey team.
The Lions got off to an auspicious start in
the tournament winning its first two
games. On Saturday afternoon, Goderich
dumped Acton 4-1 and later that day the
.team whipped Exeter 8-0 to earn a berth in
the championship semi-final Thursday at 2
p.m. against Hanover.
Mayor Eileen Palmer dropped the
ceremonial first puck after opening
remarks were offered by tournament
chairman Chisholm, . Palmer and Lions
president Paul Spittal.
The two tc—r- rnay hFvc bean lolled by
the speeches for the opening period was a
quiet one. Much of the play was concen-
trated in the neutral area of the ice and
when a player made a break, he was
thwarted by great goaltending. Both Ac-
ton's Caswell and Goderich's Lumley turn-
ed in fine performances:
The second period belonged to
Goderich'.s Chris O'Neill. He bumped in
two quick goals in a 30 second span mid-
way through the period to give Goderich a
crucial two -goal lead. The goals also woke
up the partisan Goderich crowd.
The flow continued into the third period
as Goderich scored its third goal at 3:40 as
O'Neill dug the puck out of the corner and
fed Brian Lane for the goal.
Play in the third period was delayed for
several minutes by the .unfortunate injury
to referee Rick Telfor, when he was struck
down by a puck. The rest may have been
what Acton needed as they came back
after the delay to score the only goal of the
game.
Goderich responded with a goal when
Lane batted the puck up into the mesh with
less than two minutes remaining in the
game to boost Goderich into a 4-1 lead.

identical score to advance in the cham-
pionship round.

into a quick three -goal lead scoring three
times before the game was three•and a half
minutes old. Brian Lane put Goderich
ahead by a'goal after one minute of play
with Kevin Moss assisting and after Aaron
Duckworth had scored to boost Goderich
into a two -goal lead, Lane scored his se-
