Howard Carroll honored by Branch ranch 1Vnwith service medal The annual Honours and Awards Night of .Goderich Legion Branch 109 was held in the Jubilee room on Saturday, March 1 with an estimated one hundred members and guests present. • Following the opening ceremonies Presi- dent of the Branch John A. MacDonald welcomed those present and introducedthe comrades who were making the awards presentations. Comrades making presenta- tions for the Ladies Auxiliary were Aux- iliary President, Laura McLarty, Auxiliary Past President, Sharon Scruton and com- rades Auleen Theriaiylt and Dorothy Clements. For the Branch the awards were presented by the Deputy District Com- mander, Glenn Bridge, Zone Commander Jack Tufford, President, John MacDonald and Past President Claire Bedard. A Meritorious Service Medal, the highest award in the Legion, was awarded to . Branch poppy chairman Howard Carroll. Life memberships in Branch 109 were membership in the Legion were presented to ordinary, associate and honourary members who had as of the end of 1985 at- tained years of service in the Legion from tett to forty years. Auxiliary year pins were also presented. The auxiliary made personal presenta- tions to Ena Barker, Joan Hoy, Heidi Beadle and Dorothy Cox for their contribution to the Auxiliary. ' Branch Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to Judy and Dave Parks, Bert Worsell, Bert Kempster, Gene Baker, Alex Gauley, Judy Crawford and Dixie Cameron. The following received Auxiliary Past President Bars: Evelyn Carroll, Margaret Young, Rose Hill, Norma Kingswell, Eileen Harrison; Jeaa Elliott, Ferne ,Moore, Rose Marie Lassaline, Mona Davis and Anne Sprung - all now past presidents of the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch 109. , The Branch awarded a Past Officer Medal and Bar each to Past Secretary Marjorie granted to Cl re Bet a l Leroy Tayaor, Kernick and Past Branch Treasurer Lapel yea pins' ',„ c oar lnuodts Cle n "iia a'.'DJ UCW continues study on North American :Indians Christine Hoffmeyer and Ila Crozier each gave readings dealing with education and life on a reservation. Lois McGill was in charge of the business portion of our meeting. Beatrice and Everitt Sparling shared their trip to Iceland and Norway with us by means of film strip and very interesting commentary. The closing prayer was read by Beatrice followed by the hymn, Oh Worship the King All Glorious Above. Beatrice S,parling and her group were in charge when the Evening Unit of North Street UCW met for their February meeting. Beatrice opened the meeting with a poem called "Destiny" followed by appropriate verses taken ,from lst. Corinthians. To 'continue with our study book in North American Indians, Joan Hibbert gave very interesting information relating to Indian ' beliefs and the medicine wheel. Lively Irish music opens meeting for Victoria UCW Unit Two of the United Church Women of Victoria Street United Church Met on Wednesday, Mar. 5 for its meeting and open- ed with some lively Irish music on the piano, played by Joan Henwood. Fifteen members and eight visitors en- joyed a delicious dessert, prior • to the meeting, which was prepared by Mary Cur- rell and Anne Smith. . Margaret Armstrong conducted the devo- tions which were on "The Meaning of the Cross" and "The Old Rugged Cross" was sung. Mable Gray, accompanied by Joan Henwood, played "Londonderry Air" and "Country Gardens" on her violin. Dove Horton read the minutes, and the roll call was answered with a "show and tell" which included articles as small as a match holder, to quilts of various sizes and 'BOOK & GIFTS OP dust of/ the Square on East Street, beside the Post Office. Margaret Elliott from Goshen spoke a few words on her work last year in the Presbyterial on "Churtli in Society". Velma Linfield was on program andhad her daughter-in-law, Linda Linfield show a, film on Native Indians. The draw for squares was won by Anne Smith. The next meeting will. be on Apr. 9 at 7:30 p.m. beginning with dessert served by Beulah Good and Ferne Moore. Ruby Hackett will be in charge of Devotions and Margaret Armstrong the program. , Carol Simons will give a talk on her life among native Indians and there will also be a "Chinese Auction." The leader, Leona McBride closed the meeting with the verse "Never trouble trou- ble, till trouble troubles you." The award of Certificates of Merit were made to Carl and Anne Anderson, Norm Leddy, Wilf Denomme, Don Kernick and Don Stemp. In recognition of their long and devoted service to the Branch special presentations were made to comrades Harold Chambers and Vera Chambers.. Each year during this joint Branch Aux- iliary ' Honours and Awards ceremony Legion Branch 109. recognizes some of its members .who have, in varying degrees made, a contribution to the Branch.
