While Port Albert celebrates it's 150th birthday celebrations this
summer, the bridge crossing the Nine Mile River is 100, and
believed to be the oldest in Ashfield Township. Erected by Smith
Bros. of Kincardine in 1886, this bridge outlived the horse and
carriage, the flood inr1900 and two different gristmills.

Over $3,400 was collected for March of Dimes
The Ontario March of Dimes 1986 Ability
Fund campaign is officially over. Ellen Con-
nelly, Campaign Chairperson, is delighted
to report that a total of $3,400.00 was col-
lected in Goderich and area.
The donations received from our com-
munity will help enrich the lives of physical-
ly disabled adults in so many ways - by pro-
viding employment and job training oppor-
tunities; camping holidays; wheelchairs,
electronic units and other aids; improving
transportation services and. housing. ' In
short, the March of Dimes helps disabled
people discover their potential - and their
abilities.

slogan is "Help us break , the bonds of
disability', said Ellen.
"We certainly can continue to help the
thousands of physically disabled adults
across the province, thanks to the support
received from Goderich and area people,
business and clubs. Ellen would also like to
add a special thank you to the dedicated
volunteers who worked so hard and to the
members of the Post Off:cc for th., r su

port. And, of course, a very special "thank
you" to eyeryone who gave a donation. The
books are not closed as yet if you still care to
donate.
Town will not observe Local Government Week
Local Government Week will not be
observed in Goderich this year because too
much money was spent for an open house
which too few people attend::d last year.
Co.uncil decided at its Mar. 10 meeting to
forget the week, which will start on Mon-
day, Apr. 21.
"Last year council took some action and
had an open house and films with coffee
and donuts. But, the response on a signed
list showeu were was not, a sutrrcrenL
number to justify the cost," said Coun. Bill
Clifford.
It'sa shame to receive and file it but
it's not a good use for our tax dollars,"
agreed Coun. Glen Carey.
Mayor Eileen Palmer disagreed remin-
ding council that last year's open house
Was held during a storm in January on
very short notice.
"I personally would hate to cancel Local

Former West Wawanosh
company manager dies
FRANCIS FREDERICK THOMPSON
On Sunday, March 2, 1986, Frank F.
Thompson passed away at Kincardine and
District General Hospital after a lengthy il-
lness in his 73rd year.
He was born on the 10th Concession of
Kinloss Township on December 28, 1913,
youngest son of Frederick H. Thompson and
Frances G. Bell.
He received his education at S.S. No. 3
Kinloss, Teeswater Continuation and Ripley
High School, On August 27, 1938, he married
Cora Ethel Wall and they farmed on the
Kinloss farm until August 1, 1962. Frank
served as the Treasurer of Kinloss
Township from February 1949 until July
1962.
In August 1962 he was appointed
Secretary -Manager of the West Wawanosh.
Mutual Fire Insurance Co. at Dungannon'
assisted by his wife, Cora until December
31, 1978, when they retired to Kincardine.
Throughout his life, Frank was always ac-
tive and interested in community affairs
and was a member of the Kincardine United
Church.
He is survived by his wife Cora, one son
Ronald F. Thompson and his wife Jean of
Wingham, three daughters Corabelle (Mrs.
Art Danahy) of Kincardine, Bernice Glenn
of Dungannon and Joanne ( Mrs. Stephen
Whitney) of Sarnia, one sister, Mrs. Grace
Alton of Willowdale. He is also survived and
loved by 13 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents and
two brothers Herbert G. (Bert) of Brantford
and Harold H. of Kincardine.
Funeral service was held at Davey-
Linklater Funeral Home on Tuesday, March
4, 1986, and conducted.by Rev. Dr: Norman
Perry and assisted by Rev. Clarence Mc-
Clenaghan, a family friend.

Pallbearers were Norman Ross, Donald
P. MacKay, K.K. Dawson, Jack Connell,.
Grant Eckenswiller and Verne Inglis.

Janet Phelan of Godorich died at Victoria
Hospital in London on Friday, March 7, at
the age of 75.
She was a member of the Knox'
Presbyterian Church and a member of the
Royal Canadian legion Ladies Auxiliary to
Branch 109.
Born in Toronto on January 16, 1911, she
was the daughter of the late John DeLain
and Edith Munro. She was predeceased,. by
her husband Francis Phelan.
She is survived by one daughter Jane,
( Mrs. John Pepe) of Ottawa, and three
grandchildren

Service and committal were held on Sun-
day, March 9, 1986 at. 3:30 p.m. TheLadies
Auxiliary to Branch 109 held a service at the
Stiles Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon.
Services were conducted by Rev. G. L.
Royal of Knox Presbyterian Church with
soloist Jean Hanly.
Cremation.
BET'T'Y (BROWNE) WHEELER.
Betty Wheeler of Goderich died at Alex-
andra Marine and General on Tuesday,
March 4, 1986 at the age of 62.
Born in Toronto on April 23, 1923, she was
a daughter of the late Harold Browne and
Doris Murray. Slie was married to Jack M.
Wheeler, who predeceasetJler.
She is survived by a daughter, Marsha
and her husband, Gary Triebner of Bayfield
and a son, William, and his wife, Angela of
Calgary and three grandchildren, Jennifer
Triebner, Billie Joanne and Jack William
Wheeler. Dear friend of Gwyneth McRae of
Goderich, she is also survived by a sister,
Beatrice, Mrs. Edwin Carberry of Toronto.
She was predeceased by one brother,
William Browne.
Arrangements were in charge of Mc-
Callum Funeral Home. Burial in Maitland
Cemetery.
LUELLA (WILSON) GOW
Luella Gow of Goderich died at Maitland
Manor on Saturday., March 9 in her 84th
year. The former Luella Wilson of Goderich
and formerly of Belgrave. she is the beloved
wife of William Gow of Goderich.
Dear mother of Gladys, Mrs. Jack Ladd of
Gnrieriebi Violet; Mrs. Lennard Brindlev of
Dungannon; Donna, Mrs. Glenn Wales of
London, Bill Nahrgang of Rostock, and dear
sister of. Russel Wilson. of Blyth and May
MacArthur of Hillcrest Rest Home, Strat-
ford. '
She is also survived by 16 grandchildren
andi14 great grandchildren.
She .was predeceased by he'r parents,
James and Priscilla (Sowler) Wilson and a
brother, George Wilson of Blyth.
Pallbearers were grandsons, • Ron
Brindley, Wayne .Ladd, Michael Wales and
