The suggestion was made to council by Coun. Peter McCauley at its Mar,, 10 meeting. "Our own telephone book has 911 three inches high and it would be nice if we.Fould be included in that. Not everyone has the police and fire number at his fingertips," he said. Mayor Eileen Palmer told council that the Goderich police commission had look- ed into a 911 number for the town but was stopped by the "sizeable cost" involved in converting the system. The CRTC is holding a public hearing to review Bell Canada's financial position and is welcoming any comments the com- mission should take into consideration. Extra -billing means special treatment ® from page 4 after negotiation between their professional representatives and the province." Extra billing has nothing to do with a doc- tor's experience or skill. Physicians' themselves decide. whether to opt -out. Any doctor, however junior, can extra bill. And no 'one, – no -Leven the proponents of extra ailing – argues that the care provided by opted -in doctors is inferior in quality to that provided by those who are opted out. Elston, on behalf of the Liberal govern- ment, has repeatedly indicated that both he and the government are willing to deal sen- sitively and in good faith with physicians to ensure that they receive fair and reasonable compensation. But it is also this government's respon- sibility to ensure that all patients have ac- cess to the physicians of their choice, that they are able to seek necessary health care free from any financial constraints, and that St. Patricks DINNER & DANCE Sat. Huron -Middlesex Minister of Agriculture and Food Tutors needed for reading class ® from page 6 the grocery store, they can't read the labels; they depend on the pictures. One' student bought peaches for dessert once but they turned out to be yarns," says Spence. Because students are often embarrassed about not knowing how to read or write, the school is a very personal and private thing. Many of the students are referred by their employers or Family and Children's Services. They didn't learn to read because they didn't learn to cope with the pace at school, their teachers weren't able to spend time with them -reading, they were advanced in school because of their size and age or they had to leave school for family reasons. Many of the students are men from age 20 to 50. They work at their own pace from the first book on after. they're tested for their level of reading and matched up with a tutor who (.ideally) has the same in- terests. , "These classes have given many people a new lease on life. They learn they're not the only ones who couldn't read and they can join groups they didn't normally join for ear they'd have to read something," says Spence. The rewards are also as many for the tutor as they are for the student. "I don't think I've ever had so much satisfaction, enjoyment or reward for two hours a week as I have from tutoring. I can see the results in what I'm doing all the 'time," she says. "It's really something when you hear so- meone say, 'Today, I read my first newspaper article' or `Today, I was able to HARDI &ES .o' 1 sign my own cheque at the bank.'" The classes are strictly voluntary for both the tutor and student and are funded by donations by the Men and Women's. Teacher's Associations, the Beta Sigma Phi and the IODE. Support also coins from the Huron County Library and its chief librarian Bill Partridge who provides books for tutors. Students are asked to buy their own books. . . "I know there are still people out there who need the help. I'm more than willing to help out if I can. get a tutor and a student together," says Spence. Styling By David PERMS... PERMS... PERMS...
