Tutors needed for rea
BY SUSAN HUNLERTMARK
If you can write, have a good
understanding of what you read and can
spare two hours every Monday night for
the next 10 months, you're urgently needed
by local people who want to learn the basic
skills of reading and writing.
Two or three tutors are needed to teach
at the adult education classes at Knox
Presbyterian Church in Goderich, says
Pat Spence, who took over the program
from its founder, Sheila Fink a year ago. ,
"It takes a lot of courage for someone to
admit they can't read or write and need
help. And, it's amazing how many people
there are with this problem. We need pa-
tient tutors who can work on a one-to-one
basis with them," she says.
The program to combat local illiteracy
was started in 1978 by Sheila Fink who
began to use the Presbyterian Church
basement for classes once 10 students join-
ed. As many as 15 students from Goderich,
Clinton, Auburn, Vanastra and the sur-
rounding area are now taking ads'antage
of the classes.
Those in Huron County who can't read or
write have lots of company in the 1981 cen-
sus which shows five million illiterate peo-
ple in Canada.
Of the five, four million are classified as
functionally illiterate and can read at a
Grade 8 level. The remaining one million
read at a lower level than Grade 5 and pro-
bably can't fill out a job application or
read the notes their children bring home
from school.
`These people have to depend on TV
.because they 'can't read a newspaper. At

Art Lazat has reached the Grade 8 level of reading after six years of adult education classes
at Knox Presbyterian Church in Goderich. When he first started, he could only write his
name. He says the classes have taught him that he's not the only one who didn't know how to
read and write. His tutor is Betty MacKenzie, who's been teaching adult classes for eight
years. (photo by Susan Hundertmark)
