Jr. Vikinj.s driip first- round game in WOSSA by TD The GDCI junior Vikings had a good year, finishing second in the Huron -Perth Con- ference regular basketball season, and tak- ing the Stratford Central Rams to the final game of the best -of -three championship series. The Vikings also represented their con- ference at the WOSSA "AA" championship tournament last Friday at Arva, but as in all sports, unless a team goes all the way, it loses the last game it plays. The Vikings lost 60-54 to the Rams in the third game of the league championship last Tuesday and were overpowered 81-44 by a strong Aylmer East Elgin team in the WOSSA tournament, Fri- day. The Vikings played well against Stratford and held a 25-23 lead at halftime in the deciding game, but a 10 point run by the Rams to begin the second half proved decisive. The Vikings were in foul trouble by that stage, and although they came back to within four points with two minutes left in the game, they could not quite manage to overcome the Rams' lead. • Shawn Wilson led the Vikings attack with 17 points. and was the game's high scorer. Byron Bowman had 14 points and Scott Car- row had 11. Mike Bush, with eight, and An- drew MacAdam with four points rounded out the Viking scoring. D. Barnes, with 14 and H. Troeung with 12 points,. led the Rams to victory. The taller Aylmer East Elgin Eagles flew a little too high for the Vikings in the open- ing round game of the WOSSA champion- ship. The Vikings were in the game in the first half,. trailing 19-16 after one quarter and 44-32 after two quarters, but the Eagles soared for a 37 point second half while the Vikings scored only 12 points. Th Eagles ousted Sarnia St. Pats 70-64 in the s&mi-final, but lost 57-50 to Sarnia Nor- thern m the championship game. Byron Bowman had 16 points for coach Myles Murdock's Vikings, Scott Garrow ad- ded 12, Sean Wilson hooked 10, Mike Bush got four points and Andrew MacAdam had two. Pat Gilson led the Eagles, in their victory over, the: V ikings with 24 points.. The Vikings will lose Garrow, Bowman, MacAdam; Bush, Kevin Haasnoot, and Greg Townsend to senior ranks next year, but - Mire six players, Kevin Black, Craig .War -k,_ Scott Glew, Jim Laithwaite, Sean Wilson and Calvin Knight eligible to return. After winning the first game in the best -of -three final series, the Goderich Vikings lost the next two games in Stratford as Central won the Huron -Perth title. (photo by Dave Sykes) in Sr• v 1Kin s ose WOSSA tournament by TD Basketball probably more than any other sport, often sees games decided in the last few seconds of play. To. coin a phrase, sometimes you win at the buzzer and sometimes you lose at the buzzer. The GDCI senior Vikings had a taste of each situation in their last two games of 1985-86 season. Two weeks ago, the Vikings won the Huron -Perth senior boys' basketball cham- pionship with a dramatic 45-43 double over- time victory on their home -court over the Exeter Panthers by scoring at the buzzer. Last Friday, m the WOSSA "AA" tourna- ment, in Strathroy, the Vikings were the vic- tims of a last second basket by Sarnia St. Pats which gave the Fighting Irish a 54-53 victory over the Vikings. The Vikings, had a 12 point lead in the game with under five minutes remaining; but some key turnovers let the Fighting Irish steal the victory. The most important turnover came with only seven Seconds re- mai-riing aridithe Vikings -in possession -of -the ball out of bounds. The in -bound pass was deflected and came down into the hands of Sarnia's Kevin Gallivan who made the shot which gave his team the victory. The Fighting Irish' joy was short-lived, however, as they were eliminated in their next game by the Tillsonburg Gemini, 79-55. The Gemini lost in the championship final 58-56 to Sarnia Northern. Except for their problems in the last few minutes of the game, the Vikings played well. Todd Graham was. the game's top scorer with 21 points. Graham tore the Irish zone defence to shreds with.. his quickness and was able to hand the ball off to his for- wards for easy layups. Dave Almasi and Darryl Black, the Vikings' big men inside had 16 points and 10 points respectively, many as a result of Graham's assists. Travis Bell and Bob Barwick completed the Viking scoring with four points apiece. Don Meace led St. Pats with 16 points and; Joe Pagano had 15. The loss was a bit of a disappointment for coach Lynn.Meyers and his Vikings but it did nothing to take the bloom off a fine -season-for-the Vikings -who wont tlle.Huron- Perth championship and were undefeated in Huron -Perth play.
