Junior Farmers are
marching forward to
a -better thanever future
HURON COUNTY - During the month of
March, you will notice a lot of attention on
the Junior Farmer Clubs in Huron County.
So what's all the excitement about? For
about the cult of a record album, young peo-
ple
in Ontario can buy a, membership in an,
organization that will give them a whole
year of social activities and personal
challeng: .
The Junior Farmer's Association offers
its members, who range in age from 15 to 29,
a wide variety of interesting activities, in-
cluding travel, sports, cultural activities,
and leadership training programs.
Junior Farmers is an entirely self -
governed organization, offering each and
every one of its members the opportunity to
• take on leadership roles, in the, local clubs as
well as in the provincial association. Many
elected . officials and leaders in the
agricultural community credit their early
leadership training in Junior,. Farmers for
their later accomplishments.
Of course, a vital organization of young
people calls for a large portion of social ac-
tivity. Besides community betterment pro-
jects which benefit their community as a
whole, local clubs organize many events
each year for members, including sports
competitions and dances. The provincial
association also carries out a number of ac-
tivities for the members during the year.
There are winter and summer games,
where athletes can show their talents;
Culturama (plays, debating, public speak-
'ing and sing -swing, festival of musicaland
dance competitions.
If travelling to new places, meeting new
people and learning about other parts of the
world interests you, Junior Farmers can of
fer you travel scholarships to other Cana-
dian provinces, the United States, the
United Kingdom, Australia, and Western
Europe. Junior Farmers also sends
delegates regularly to conferences and
workshops in various areas.
The reasons for joining Junior Farmers
are as wide and varied as the 'membership
itself, and the best part is that the activities
are constantly. changing and improving to,
Meet the needs bf'the niembers:So.why not
get a little excited about Junior Farmers
during the month of March', and come out to
one of the meetings or other activities and
join this group of young people.

John Haines off Wingham has been ap-
pointed to the Huron County Housing
Authority, Minister of Housing Alvin Curl-
ing announced.
Haines, who is retired, will serve as a
federal representative on the seven -
member authority that manages Ontario
Housing Corporation's 415 assisted housing
units in Bayfield, Blyth, Brussels, Clinton,
Exeter, Goderich, Seaforth, Wingham and
Zurich.
The federal, provincial and municipal
governments nominate individuals for ap-
pointment to the housing authorities by pro-
vincial orders -in -council. The province ap-
points the housing authority chairman. '
The day-to-day management of OHC's
84,000 housing units is carried out by local
housing authorities, although the primary
responsibility for assied housing remains
with OHC.
Curling said, "By volunteering their time
to serve on the local housing authority,
private citizens such as Haines are helping
to ensure that Ontario's assisted housing
program is sensitive and can respond to the
needs of the many communities it serves."
The Huron County Housing Authority
manages 331 senior citizen assisted housing
units and 84 units for low-income families.
The authority also provides housing for
physically, developmentally and psych-
iatrically -handicapped persons who are
capable of living on their own.

hep canvass
for Foundation
The leadership of youth is exemplified in
the work of the Huron County. Junior
Farmers, according to the campaign chair-
man for the Heart and Stroke Foundation,
Barney Goldsmith.
Despite the obstacles inherent in co-
ordinating and canvassing rural areas in the
winter, for several years the Junior Farmer
clubs have assumed ,this reponsibility, rais-
ing thousands of dollars in the townships
where they have been traditionally active.
The South Huron Club is responsible for
the canvass in Usborne Township. The
Howick Club•is working in Howick and Turn -
berry Townships and the West Huron Club
co-ordinates the canvass of Ashfield
Township.
In addition, this year the Seaforth Junior
Farmers will be doing part of Tuckersmith
Township and the Clinton Club will assist in
the Hullett Township canvass which is co-
ordinated by the Kinbtirn Foresters. '
' For a number of years, another youth
group, the Grade 13 students at Seaforth
District High School, have sponsored the
Heart Fund canvass in the town of Seaforth.
