In front of the biggest I have ever seen - because it was the closest I'd ever seen - were the rgpst brilliant colors of reds, purples and a blue sky behind it all. I realiz- ed it .had to be a burn - but, was it wild or controlled and to have such brilliant colors rising so high it had to be a bad fire, somewhere. • As we proceeded - this display was on my left - I changed my route so that I wouldn't be caught in a traffic jam I expected would be closer to that burning area. I wish I could describe the unusual colors rising with that great cloud - it was so spectacular. A few miles later, I could see closer to the ground, great brilliantly white rolling clouds in front of the darker purples and all -the shades of red. The lower white I knew were created by the fire controllers and the blazing reds and darks were the burning trees or whatever -1 - I was so excited about it - the cloud seem- ed miles high - but I'm sure I could never paint it so that you, too, could feel the excite- ment of it all. Twenty miles later one could see a long dark purple streak drifting like a thin veil with that white cloud behind it. We were now on the other side of the burn. We heard later it was a controlled burning of over 500 acres of scrub land and a good day for it with little wind. So that explained why it was so high in the sky. The "scrub" takes fire easily as the temperature grows higher and so the con- trols. It is probably needed .for buildings anyway! Our Dominion also, has a heavier popula- tion on the east, the centre a farming coun- try, the mountains which take up so much of the western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia and a not too heavily populated Pacific Coastal area and lots of beautiful lakes. As with your Alaska, our north is also a very delicate area. I learned of Goderich in 1946 - and I've lov- ed it ever since. I had lived in Essex County - which lies alongside Detroit on one side, Ohio on the other - a very small, flat county. In Goderich I often feel that Essex County must be smaller than Goderich and the sur- rounding area because Goderich is anything but flat and uninteresting. The scenery is beautiful. Goderich sits well above Lake Huron and is the only port on the east side of Lake Huron. The harbor is deep enough to receive ships from the St. Lawrence Seaway and is a busy harbor'. Our town was designed in the early 1800s, a square shape with octagon in the centre which was to hold the county Courthouse - and many trees. The streets radiate out from this centre with four of the streets go- ing right to the courthouse. Beyond this are shops all around the oc- tagon so this is named "The Square" - perhaps because it sounds nicer than the Oc- tagon, and also it'makes a "square" within the square... but not really! Expert builders from the overseas countries built many fine homes here besides the fine stores around The Square. The mighty Maitland River meanders for about 75 miles on its way to, Lake Huron. At the mouth of the river the area, below the cliff on which the town stands is where the village of Goderich began. Explorers found this area pleasing and so people frothe British Isles and Europe settled here. We have a great many arts and skills brought rleee y- t3°res Peop?-e----of whic _we are proud. ' We now have a fine Arts and Crafts Park every year from July 17 to 19 in Courthouse Park. The days before the show we.have fun days with a carnival atmosphere which everyone enjoys. It is such a super event many make their vacation coinside with it. It was not so many years that I travelled Our museum is the finest in Ontario, the around the States and was amazed and Shops are very !lice and our beach besides fascinated by what I'd seen. At first it seem-' bathing and boating has great wind surfing ed odd that most of the population was along fun. I hope you and your friends can enjoy the east coast but when I saw California, the Goderich very soon. Grand Canyon and its large area and all those `deserts I understood the population Love, Martha High tech `Peter and the Wolf' will be presented An exciting new production of "Peter and ,the Wolf", by Nova Scotia's acclaimed Mer- maid Theatre, will be presented at Blyth Memorial Hall on Saturday, Mar. 15, at 2 ' p.m. Thies spevial ,version of "Peter and the Wolf" is an inventive adaptation of Pro- .kofiev's classical musical tale for children.
